This past week has been one of the best weeks so far since being in Japan. I went to work on tues and wed and was told on wed that I don't have to go to work until next sunday (27th) due to the fact that no one wants to come to our restaurant because its so damn expensive. Its crap for money but otherwise its great because it means I have more time to do what I want. On friday (18th) I went to Tepco Electrical Museum (Denryokukan) with two of my friends Paul and Nastassja. The 3rd flood was closed for refurbishment which was shit because thats where we wanted to go, you can go and touch stuff and play around with stuff, but we had a quick look around anyway. Its all about energy saving in the home and how to make better energy saving products in the future and stuff (in Japanese obviously)
Then we went on a mission to find this shop called Ash and Diamonds because Nastassjas friend bought a gorgeous wallet from that shop. We got there only to find out that, that very wallet was 15,000yen (thats 150dollars for anyone American who's reading this and about 75 sterling pounds) so yeah that was kind of depressing but she found a gorgeous necklace and matching earings for 5,000 yen so it was all good. This set me off on a massive spending spree for some unknown reason. I bought a red hat (its really cute), 2 tops a blue one and a purple one and a pair of shoes (obviously) Then we went for dinner at El Torito (mexican restaurant) and Nas and Paul were happy because they were craving mexican food.
I have this class called Experiential Activity and we have to go and experience stuff and we get one credit so its pretty easy and quite fun. My group decided to go to Ryogoku (sat 19th) to go and see where the Sumos practice but unfortunately it was closed because they were all at a match in Kyushu. I think the class guests (Japanese students who are supposed to help us) was supposed to check this out but I don't think they did. So we browsed around the one shop that was open, bought some sumo souvenirs and went to eat chanko-nabe. Chanko-nabe for those of you who don't know is what the sumos eat to keep their strength up. All in all it was a pretty good day. After we finished there I went to Shibuya with Paul and Nastassja and watched her get her nose pierced and went and had dinner at Shakeys.
On sunday (20th) I joined another experiential group just because I could (whoo hoo no job! I can't express how happy I am) We went to see Yasukuni Jinja (shrine) at Kudanshita. Its really famous as its where all the bodies were buried after the war. The museum was only 500yen to get in (5 US dollars, 2.50 sterling pounds)It was so long though! It had 20 rooms that you walked through and it had so much information. The information was written in both Japanese and English but there was just too much information. We also watched a film in Japanese about the war and what Yasukuni Jinja represents and stuff but it was quite difficult to understand. I understood about half of it. It was quite a good day apart from the fact that we were supposed to meet at 11am but Pascal and his g/f (who by the way doesn't even go to our university) were 30minutes late, this combined with the fact that the museum was so big, plus the movie was 50mins meant that we didn't have lunch till 4pm so we were exhausted and hungry!!
Getting up to go to uni today was pretty tough as the past few days have been so much fun. Well I hope to do another update soon.
