Chapter 6- A Silent Prayer

Apr 22, 2005 02:43

Adyn walked into her apartment to find Hillary sitting cross legged on the couch bent over the table. She was quiet aside from the few sniffles here and there. Placing her coat on the counter slowly Adyn began to walk toward her friend.

She tried not to startle her," Hillary? "

Hillary jumped up and turned around. She sniffed and looked at Adyn reaching up to itch her nose. "Oh its you! What are you doing home?", she snapped.

"You, asked me to come home." Adyn responded, "You said you needed me to be here to get a package cause you had errands."

Hillary stood there crossing her arms, "Oh yea that, never mind, you can leave now. Go do whatever it was you were doing"

Adyn crossed her arms. Something was up. Hillary was acting very strange and she had to find out why. She walked over and sat in the chair across from the couch. It was by far her favorite piece of furniture in the whole apartment. It was made of black leather and, she sunk into it when she sat down. The chair practically swallowed her. There had been many a night when Adyn had slept in it.

After slipping off her shoes she threw her legs across the arm. She reached above her head and pulled the orange and white afghan down to her lap. She played with its strings while trying to think of a way to break the akward silence.

"It sure is cold out there,” she spoke as she looked at their tv. "So what are you doing just sitting here in the dark? Why aren’t you watching tv? " she looked toward Hillary who was messing with a white substance on the table.

"Well you know me, " she looked up, "I just wanted my peace and quiet" She sniffed again then coughed.

"Coming down sick?" Adyn questioned.

Hillary walked into the kitchen leaving a plastic straw, a razor and the white substance on the table.

"Hill I asked you a question. Are you coming down sick?" Adyn asked again this time getting out of the chair almost tripping on her shoes. She bent down and moved them over to the corner then met Hillary in the kitchen.

Hillary finally answered, "You know Adyn im really tired and not in the mood for all your questions right now" She then turned to get into the ice box and grabbed a Pepsi from the bottom shelf.

"What’s with you all of a sudden and what’s all this you got laying out on the table?" Adyn asked placing her arms on their small kitchen counter.

"If you wanna know come look at it, " Hillary responded as she walked back into the front room taking her place back in front of the table.

Adyn watched as she picked the straw up and put it in what now seemed to be some sort of powder. Adyn moved in to get a closer look. She stood up not knowing what to think. As she watched she began to feel sick. Hillary was doing cocain in their living room, in front of her. She was stunned, all she could do was stand and watch in awe. Adyn felt her heart drop to the floor.

Hillary put her nose up to the straw and sniffed in the contents, and then sat up. "So, where the hell were you last night? Out hoeing around? Out getting fucked up, and pregnant?" Hillary asked laughing. She lay back on the couch putting her arms up over her head, "Oh wait never mind no that’s not you, you’re to "good" to go out and do something like that. Little Ms. Adyn Renee Miller, a.k.a. Little Ms. Perfect. You haven’t smoked a day in your life, never drank before last night, waited until you met the right guy to lose your virginity, and even graduated top of your class. Now your moving on to open your own business, your parents should be so proud. Pfftt. Ha if they knew what a slut you could be," she smirked and then rolled her eyes.

Adyn threw herself back down in the chair she had been sitting in previously. She didn’t know what to think or say. Her best friend just began attacking her. The girl who had been there for her more than anyone else in the world, more than her own family, was sitting there attacking her character. Adyn was confused, and she wanted to cry. She never imagined in their whole five years of friendship, that Hillary would ever say anything like this. This was very un-Hillary like. Adyn sat back in the chair and didn’t say anything. She didn’t know that she could take any more of Hillary’s attack. Something was wrong with her, something major. She scared Adyn. Adyn examined Hillary’s face. The poor girl looked as if she hadn’t slept a wink. She had dark rings under her eyes, and her hair was matted and dirty. Her mascara was even running down her face. The only thing that made her look the slightest bit decent was the fact that she had changed into clean night clothes. She continued to watch as Hillary sniffed. Adyn then grew angered and confused.

She stood up and walked over to Hillary grabbing the straw from her hand, "What the hell are you doing? What is this shit? Cocain?"
Grabbing the bag from Hillary’s left side she held it up.

"Don’t you know how dangerous this is?" Adyn asked shaking her head in disappointment.

Hillary stood up to grab the bag, but Adyn pulled it away, "No, no, I don’t think so sit down"

Hillary grabbed Adyn’s arm squeezing making sure to keep a tight grasp, "Bitch give me the bag, why does it matter to you? It’s not like I care what you think anyway."

Adyn starred her in the eyes for a few moments but didn’t budge, she wasn’t handing her the bag. Hillary tried grabbing for it once more but Adyn put her hand on her chest pushing her back. Hillary became outraged and pushed Adyn in the chair then slapped her across the face causing her to drop the bag and hold her cheek. She then bent over grabbing the bag.

As she stood up she looked Adyn in the eyes, "That’s what you get for not doing what the hell I said. Next time it may be worse."

Adyn held her cheek and watched as Hillary took her place back on the couch emptying more of the cocain from the bag onto the table. A tear trickled down her face as she watched her friend throw herself away, and not care. In her mind she kept saying that she would do all that she could to help no matter what. She wasn’t going to let her friend let herself go, especially not this soon or this way. Adyn wondered how long this had been going on and if she had been doing it in the apartment the whole time. She wondered if maybe Hillary had been doing it since or before she met her. It was amazing how she thought she knew her but in reality she didn’t. At least that’s how she felt. She felt further away from Hillary than she ever had, like they weren’t friends anymore. There had to be some sort of intervention, maybe a clinic? Adyn sighed and shook her head.

Hillary stood up, "Well im going to try sleep, maybe, don’t touch my stash. Night!"

"Yea whatever," Adyn stood up and waited for her to shut her door. After a few minutes had passed, she grabbed a towel from the kitchen sink and went to wipe off the table grabbing the trash can along the way. She put the trash can down at the end of the table top and wiped the mess into the trash and threw the bag in along with it. She headed back into the kitchen and washed her hands. Putting on her coat she tied the trash bag and headed out the door and to the dumpster. After throwing the trash away Adyn decided to stand outside. She was thankful it had stopped raining, it was beautiful out now. Although she couldn’t see the stars like she could back home, in Kansas, she still looked up toward the sky. The air smelt of the rain and it was a relaxing feeling.

She closed her eyes and began to say a silent prayer. She knew God would help her if she put her faith in him. Although lately this had become hard considering what had happened in her life the past few months.

"Maybe God was trying to draw me back," she thought, "maybe he’s trying to tell me that this wouldn’t have happened if I wouldn’t have strayed away. "

"Lord Im sorry," she said in a whisper, " Im sorry that I strayed away from your guidance, and I feel bad for making such a request, but I need you. Well correction, she needs you." Adyn sat on the steps leading into her apartment building for ten extra minutes. She sat feeling the cool breeze blow across her face and continued to silently pray. Ten minutes passed and Adyn began to grow cold. She decided it was time to go inside. Walking into the apartment she adjusted the thermostat and then headed back to her room. She placed her coat on her bed and looked at herself in the mirror. She smiled as she noticed she was still wearing Zacs clothes. She sighed and laughed , she had gotten so caught up with Hillary that she had completely forgotten to change her clothes. She grabbed a wrap around from her dresser and pulled her hair back. Throwing her coat off her bed and pulling back the covers Adyn turned off her light. She sat down on her bed pulling her curtain down to block the light. She then lay her head on her pillow and pulled her comforter over her body. She closed her eyes and hoped that Zac had read the messege in the napkin. She knew that shed soon have to return his clothes but there was no rush for now.
