This is my second rant is as many days concerning Torchwood & if you don't want to "hear" me bitching & moaning and ranting & raving about how much RTD and TW suck ass, leave now. There are MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Torchwood: Children of Earth episodes 1-5.
After yesterday's episode & my LJ rant I took some time to calm down. I rewatched the episode, including the scenes of Ianto's death & I started to have a little bit of hope. Jack kissed him just before he died and as most of us Janto fans recall the first time Jack kissed Ianto after he'd been seriously injured/killed by Lisa he revived. Now, was that due to the fact that he was in fact only unconcious or was it a bit of Jack's life force flowing into Ianto? I always wondered. So, when we saw Ianto climbing out of the crater that had been the Hub, I started thinking, maybe Ianto is harder to kill than we thought. Maybe when Jack kissed him in "Cyberwoman" he got a little bit of the "immortal" magic passed along.
So, I downloaded the final episode and hoped maybe, just maybe Ianto's death would not be the end. However, I made the mistake of reading the reaction posts to the final episode & I was disappointed by what I read. Then I watched the episode. Ianto's death was the end for him, afterall it sees and not only that, but Jack in a moment of complete OOCness actually uses his own grandson as a weapon against the 456 & by doing so, kills the boy.
I was a crying, headachey, emotional mess after watching this episode. I feel really manipulated by this show & by RTD in particular! Last season Tosh died & Owen died; this time Ianto died, Jack became a comletely hollow, empty, emotional cripple and what happened to Gwen? Oh yeah, she got to live happily ever after with her husband and her soon-to-be baby. She got to have a life and a future and someone that loved her. Every other character on this show sufffered horribly during their lives and either died or was left with nothing in the end...all but Gwen. Because she has and always will be Russell T. Davies pet character, his darling creation that can never lose. Yes her co-workers died and Jack left, but she still had her family, her husband, her other friends(like Andy), and her baby. That is nothing to the kind of suffering that Tosh, Owen, Ianto & Jack endured during their lives on this show.
I know it's only a tv show & I shouldn't be this upset about it, but I am depressed. I just feel let down by the writers/producers of TW. I feel like I got emotionally invested in this show and they just tore my heart out and spit on it, then gave me the finger and told me to piss off!
If there is a 4th season I won't be watching it, unless Ianto miraculously is brought back because without him Jack seems broken and Gwen has always been my least favorite character, so there's no reason for me to keep watching. It would be too painful.
To their credit I have to say that Eve Myles, Kai Owen, John Barrowman & Gareth David-Lloyd acted their ASSES off in this season. Eve Myles can cry like no one I have seen and she always gets me because her tears always seem very genuine and heartfelt. John & Gareth literally broke my heart in their final scenes together and John's potrayal of Jack's grief gutted me.
I even give credit to the writers for most of the season, but the writing in the final conclusion of the saga was nothing short of weak, emotionally exploitive, pointless & unimaginative. There was no reason for Ianto to die, no reason for Steven to die. The "weapon" they used to fight the 456 was lame, contrite and totally unimpressive. It is something Torchwood/UNIT or any number of other organizations should have figured out the FIRST day when the kids were talking in unison. And, killing Clem off was pointless when he could have been used in place of Steven in the end. He could have volunteered to save the children. It would have been heartbreaking and noble and it would have kept Jack from sacrificing his own grandson-which is something that this character never would have done...EVER!
There were so many other ways this season could have gone that would have been better than what we were given, but it's clear that the writers/producers don't really give a damn about the fans. Well, I've got news for them. Fans are what make a show. Dick people around long enough and they get fed up and stop watching...just ask the producers of Heroes about that. Well, I'm fed up & I know I'm not the only one. A large part of the TW fandom are Ianto fans, and added to the Tosh and Owen fans that were disgruntled after season 2 they are taking a big chance on losing a large portion of their audience if they plan on going for a 4th season at some point.
I don't know if I'll be bothering to buy season 3 on DVD. Why waste the money? Why put money in the pockets of the asshats that ruined Torchwood for me?I'm just so pissed off that they ruined such a wonderful show, just for some ratings and because they wanted to be edgier and grittier. If I wanted edgy & gritty I wouldn't be watching sci-fi tv.
