Film and fetish

Saw Planet of the Apes last night at one of the local media PR things. Thanks go to Phantasm for free tickets (and therefor decent giveaway ideas). I'm of two minds about it; being a Tim Burton movie I'd have liked it to appeal to me more... and Danny Elfman, soundtrack god that he is seems to be trying to beJohn Williams *sigh*.

The movie was engrossing, although the ending left me rather cold. To coin an American term I wanted it to have "closure" and I felt it did not. Tim Roth was amazing as General Thade but I'm unsure what the intention was by making him angry in each scene, even the quiet or romantic scenes. The human girl in the leather and twine wonderbra was somewhat disturbing... and I don't understand the Hollywood fashion for collagen pumped upper lips that look like the aftermath to a pub brawl (Angelina Jolie, Denise Richards, the girl from Dark Angel... all guilty). All in all it was worth seeing once. I'd be interested in seeing the original now as a comparative.

Next rant for today:

Japanese Sailor-Fuku (seeraa fuku) outfits. Why do they carry such fetish value outside Japan?

After many rounds of Dead or Alive 2where even the Western characters get miniskirted Sailor-Fuku and a delightful week with the Japanese exchange students wandering around the city looking fresh faced and gropable I pause to wonder why this look appeals so much? The western equivalent would easily be theMacgregor tartan pleated miniskirt and white (almost) see through blouse, and this has appeal even in America where uniforms are bound only to the likes of Catholic schools.

But what makes the phenomenon even stranger is that often we don't want school girls in such outfits. We want women in girls clothing, with all the sexuality and body shape inherent but with the illusion of adolescence.

What makes this look so appealing? Is it the innocence or the corruptibility inherent in the idea? My brain refuses to release an answer and says only "hmmmmmmm sailor fuku" *chuckle* Most of my proclivities towards one fetish or another I can trace to a reason, my mother's refusal to wear flat shoes, and her talon like nails, the feeling of protection standing next to a large man (and in Mason's boots he's even taller *gurgle*).. but this one I cannot.

pop culture, non spoilerific movie round up, bdsm
