We've spent a long long time together...

And so it goes, once again I find myself with the internet at my fingertips, and once again I amhoping to make a return to the world of live journal. We'll see how this goes for awhile, and take it from there.

2007 is behind me, behind us all.

and now it's time for a new year, and as everyone would have you believe, a new year means a new you. No, this year I'm going for the same me, a lot of my resolutions for the year have to do with continuing what I've been doing, keeping the status quo in check, blah blah blah. I know none of you want to read about my resolutions, so let's just let that pass.

I'm in Kodiak Alaska, enjoying my tour on the Coast Guard Cutter Munro. Since reporting to the boat in March things have been fantastic. I visited Lima Peru, Panama, Golfito Costa Rica, Dutch Harbor AK, I spent the entire summer living bayside in San Francisco, and a month this winter in honolulu hi, not to mention all the time I spent at sea, and here in Kodiak. It's absolutely amazing. The coming year will have me going to a bunch of new and amazing places as well.

I'm living in a 3 bedroom apartment with 2 other guys from work. We've got a TV screen that is literally 6ft by 8ft. It's absolutely bonkers. We've got more speakers in the living room than we could ever need, although if we ever need to shake the entire building, we could do it, no problem. We've got a permanent beer pong/football/ dining room table, a neat little kitchen and a single bathroom for the three of us to share. I've got my own room and that's really what matters. My roommates joke to our house guests that my room is "the kids' room" because of all the art works, pictures, stuffed animals, colors and general chaos going on in my room. I also have a wicked great book collection that continues to grow week by week. In the last 5 months I've read something like 29 books, some fantastic, some fantastically long, but all worth-while. If you've got any suggestions send them my way. I'm currently in the middle of three books Notes From Underground, Persuasion, and Leaves of Grass. Should be a good couple of weeks while I digest those and get them into my brain. Some of the notable books i've finished recently include The Grapes of Wrath, Winter of our Discontent, Go, and Junky, among many many others. Some of the authors who are grooving in me that I just love are Steinbeck (obviously), Jack Kerouac, Chuck Klosterman, Chuck Phailanuck (sp?) and Hunter S. Thompson. Ah goodness all around.

In the middle of March my boat heads back out to sea and up to the Bearing for some fun times in wicked weather. Should be another great adventure. You may be wondering if I'm turning into a stereotypical sailor.
Am I smoking?
Am I drunk all the time?
Do I curse constantly?
Do I sleep with strange women everytime the boat makes land?
Essentially the answer is yes to all of these questions, although not all of them, and I'm not about to tell you which go which way. just let your mind wonder. Life on the high seas is exciting and wonderful. When this great experiment is over I will surely miss the sea and my time spent sailing upon it.

I haven't been home to Minnesota or Illinois since March, and althought I'd like to be getting home before we head back to sea in the spring, I don't think it's going to happen. Ah, the life of a sailor.

until next time...

Paul
