The Harbour...Chapter 56: Friendships

Carolyn spun away from the door and moved toward the window that looked out onto the pool deck.

Her friends stood staring at her.  She was breathing heavily.

“Go after him!”  Cassie finally burst out.

“Go after him, Carolyn!” She walked toward her, repeating her command.

“Carolyn,” Elisabeth urged softly, her eyes shiney.

Elisabeth, a highly respected, no-holds-barred sports journalist with the National News Network (NNN) was, away from the cameras, a surprisingly soft-spoken person.  She was certainly the most emotional of the trio who had been friends since middle school.

Carolyn turned.  Though her eyes were filled with tears, her mouth was set and the flush in her cheeks had heightened.

“He had no right to say anything to Kyle,” she said determinedly.

“The man that you love...have loved...for a long time, has just walked out that door convinced that you don’t love him,” Cassie said, her voice rising with each word, as her eyes pierced Carolyn’s.

Carolyn shook her head as though to clear it.

She pressed the palms of her hands against her face, and rubbed at her eyelids with her fingers, finally dropping them to look at her friends.

“That’s not what this is about!”

The other women looked at each other in disbelief.

“Guys, I got this.  I need to talk to Carolyn alone,” Cassie said, motioning the others toward the door.

Carolyn ran her hands over her face again.  She looked exhausted, but her cheeks remained flushed.

Then looking from one friend to the other she settling on Cassie.

“Look.  Sorry,”  She said, her voice thick.  “I’ve got to sort this out on my own.”

“You’re making a mess of everything,” Cassie said sharply.

Carolyn looked at Cassie with an expression of mixed surprise and consternation.

“Seriously guys,” Cassie said, turning to Elisabeth and her cousin.  “I want to talk to Carolyn alone.”

The nodded.  They got it.  Cassie and Carolyn’s relationship had long blurred the lines between friendship and family.

“Carolyn,” Elisabeth, moved over to her friend, who was standing stiffly.  Hugs were not an option.

She touched her arm.

“Go after him,” she said softly.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The heavy front door swung open surprisingly fast.  Standing in the doorway was a tall, dark-haired woman, with high cheekbones and striking, smokey blue eyes.  Her ample bosom strained against the fabric of her rather conservatively cut blouse.
He didn’t notice.
His eyes met hers, and she smiled warmly.
In some far reaches of his tormented mind, Kyle finally registered that the woman was exceptionally attractive.
‘Where does Max find them?’ He thought to himself.
“Mr. Heden is waiting for you in the studio,” she said, the slightest trace of an accent.  Something South American, Kyle thought.
She lowered her thick dark eyelashes.
There was no mistaking that Max and Cassie’s new helper liked what she saw.
Kyle smiled politely and stepped inside.
“I’ll find my way,” he said, turning away quickly and heading down a long hall toward his friend’s home studio.
He felt her eyes following him.
A door up ahead swung open and Max stepped into the corridor.  His long brown hair, usually pulled back into a ponytail, swung free over his shoulder.
He grinned at Kyle and then his eyes moved past him, and rested on the young woman watching him walk away.
Max’s grin widened.
“Hey buddy!”
He stepped away from the door to usher Kyle through to the short hallway that led to his studio.
