Elisabeth stood.
“Okay. That’s it girls, we’re out of here.” Ophelia said, resting a couple of shot glasses onto the coffee table.
Carolyn lept to her feet.
“What did you say to him?” She asked Marco, her tone accusing.
His smile faded.
“I ran into him and he was talking some trash. I told him to ask you why you agreed to marry him.” There was an edge in Marco’s voice.
Cassie stood up, and Ophelia tried to motion her and Elisabeth toward the door, but they were riveted, and Carolyn and Marco seemed oblivious to their presence.
“Why would you do that?!” Carolyn asked sharply.
Cassie gasped, and her head snapped to stare at her best friend.
Marco’s frown deepened. He opened his mouth to say something and then seemed to suddenly remember they were not alone. He paused.
“Why would you do that?!” Carolyn asked again.
The friends knew they should leave.
“It’s been seventeen years, why would you even bring that up?” Her voice had taken on a shrill edge.
“Exactly!” He said, his tone hard and his blue eyes icy.
“Why after seventeen years, most of which he cheated on you, would you even care if he knew the truth? In fact, why wouldn’t you want him to know?”
“He doesn’t need to know!” Her mouth was drawn in an angry line but her eyes were filled with tears.
“And you had no right to say anything to him!”
“I’m standing here, preparing to marry you in two weeks, and you’re still protecting your ex husband’s feelings! Do you still love him Carolyn?!”
“What?! You know I don’t!” She gasped.
“Well, I’m no longer convinced of that!”
Marco turned and walked out of the room.
He deftly punched in the security code on the panel beside the front door, swung that open, and was out of the security gate before the front door had slammed shut.
