Fun gig on Tuesday night in LA. I had to perform a piece at school earlier that night, and the bottom half fancy / top half normal outfit I'm sporting bears evidence. The concert was at 8PM and I wasn't able to leave for LA till 9:30. I was there in 90 minutes, saw 2 other sets then we hit a little past midnight. Saw Amy there which was nice, as well as a super-back-in-the-day friend from music school at Michigan who's been living in LA for the last few years. Afterwards we went to Brite Spot for diner food and I drove home at 3:30, getting in just past 5AM. Now that was a fun night.
In other news-- I've been ridicuously obsessed lately with Can's TAGO MAGO. This record is so good! It's like pop genius in some crazy alternate reality (perhaps aka THE YEAR 1971). There was a possibility of Damo Suzuki coming to play the Spring Reverb festival at one point, in which case I would have conducted a Soundpainting with him, but unfortunately in Jan/Feb during the crucial period where things would have had to come together I was wrapped up in prepping my recital and my life falling apart (in hindsight I think I may have been slightly exaggerating my situation in my mind). So no Damo. Maybe some day.
The trio depicted above will be at Spring Reverb though, and I'm excited for that. IMHO we sound alternately like Brian Wilson (who we covered) and Alban Berg.
And on a side note-- this great fellow Anthony Burr is here as a finzlist for the opening in the performance faculty. He gave a concert last night that included Berg's 4 pieces for clarinet and piano, a great, super long piece by Alvin Lucier for clarinet and pure wave oscillator, a Lachenmann solo clarinet piece, a Brahms trio, and a solo work by Scelsi. It was a fucking great program. I'd say that I hope he gets the gig, but then he won't be living in New York when I get back in September.
