Currently experiencing a severe lack of motivation.... I think I'll blame the surprise head cold I acquired overnight. Sleep&tea sound wonderful right now.
I wonder how many people I've given directions to on this campus have ever actually found what they were looking for. I wish I could follow them around with a little camera to find out because seriously, I expect my direction-giving success rate is hovering somewhere just above zero (optimistically.)
I'm sure if I were to go outside right now, I would very easily find that nice older gentleman I directed to the music building and the younger woman+small child who were looking for the Natural History Museum wandering around in confusion. (Granted, the second was a week ago, so hopefully they either found it or gave up.)
However, I'm beginning to wonder if my lack of direction-giving finesse isn't a reflection of the campus itself.
-Our buildings rarely have signs, or signs in very prominent locations.
-There definitely aren't signs directing you to a certain building. (They do hide the geo museum pretty well-- from an outsider's perspective.)
-Most buildings aren't accessible by car from the main campus (any car that stops for directions on the freshman quad almost invariably needs to be redirected to Rte 116- which is a confusing concept to convey to our hapless, clueless driver who probably just wants to be at LeFrak Gymnasium....)
-Too many foot paths going in every direction.
This could go on all day, but the point is-- maybe it's not my fault if my directees never find their way . And maybe, if you're visiting Amherst College and want to find anything-- you should just pick up a map.
I'm gunna drink some more tea and maybe sleep a bit. And hope that guy somehow stumbled across the music building anyway....
