"No!" comes out in a strangled whisper.

Gabriel's body slumps to the floor, blood flowing out of his neck, and life slowly going out in his eyes. Elle furiously pounds the gate that's keeping her locked in the service elevator. It barely budges and she falls to her knees. Tears make their way down her cheeks as she tries to absorb what's going on.

Her mind is racing at a hundred miles a minute. Nothing is making sense to her. Their powers going away suddenly, Bennet hunting them...no, that did make sense. Afterall, she had shot his precious Claire-bear. And now Gabriel was lying dead before her.

"Damn it!" she yells in frustration. Her fist comes down hard on the floor. She mentally curses both Primatech and Pinehearst and the Petrelli elders. Through their manipulations and schemes, her life had utterly been destroyed. She thought she had found some semblance of happiness back on the floor of the Canfield house. Gabriel had mentioned that maybe they could reinvent themselves...and then Bennet rushed in. Leading them here to this grocery store. Gabriel's dead and she has a bullet in her leg. Elle covers her face with her hands.

A sudden noise makes her look up. It sounds like somebody struggling to breathe. Elle peers through the slots of the elevator and gasps.

"Gabriel!"

He's slowly standing back up, his neck wound healed. Elle looks down at her hands and tries shooting some electricity. It works. Adrenaline surges her system as she stands up and blasts the gate that's holding her in. The wooden slats disintegrate immediately under her power and she rushes out.

Gabriel runs towards her and when he reaches her, he grabs her and holds her tightly. He places a quick kiss on the top of her head.

"We can't do this anymore. We're not doing the work of Primatech or Pinehearst anymore," Elle's words are muffled as she smooshes her face against his chest. "Let's go somewhere else. Away from this."

He pulls her body away to look at her. "Are you sure? Is that really what you want?" One look at her face and he knows the answer.

A/N: Thanks to catyuy for keeping me motivated to write this story and prodding me along with her pointy stick. And thanks to carapheonix for looking this over and the idea of adding an extra scene. :D Not all chapters will be written so quickly, I just happened to have this mostly written before the prologue, lol.

With the thoughts of the eclipse and nearly being killed fresh on their minds, Gabriel and Elle find their way back east. They spend the month of January back in New York. In a city with 8 million people, it isn't so hard to lay low. Quickly, they find a small apartment in Queens and move right in. They change their names and identity, he becomes Grayson Rook and she becomes his wife, Gabrielle. He transforms back into a nerdy watchmaker and quickly finds a job in the city.

Elle decides to give domestic life a try. She spends hours reading through recipe books and when they seem too complicated, she zaps them in frustration until it's a pile of ash. When Gabriel gets home from work, it's usually take out that is sitting on the kitchen counter.

"Burn another cookbook, did you?"

At first, this new life seemed to be exactly what they wanted. But they slowly start finding it boring. The emotional toll of having nearly seen their own lives cut short had played into their decision to get away from it all, to have a life away form their powers. But what they thought they wanted isn't. Neither of them are suited for this type of lifestyle though they both hesitate to say it. Until one night at dinner, Elle explodes.

"I can't do this anymore!" she bursts. She throws her fork down on the plate and stares at Gabriel. Elle reminds Gabriel of what they have. "We have abilities. We can do whatever we want, take whatever we want."

"And what is it that we want?" he asks mildly.

"A life where we can be us! Powers and all. Not being wholesome and cleancut Grayson and Gabrielle." Elle grimaces. You know it's not us and I know you find it just as boring as I do."

"Elle" Gabriel pauses. "Do you know how hard it's been for me to control my hunger?"

"About as hard for me not to zap anybody that pisses me off when I'm walking around the city. You'll still be Gabriel to me, even when you act as Sylar. Because that's still a part of you. We did the same things...I just never got a new name to go along with the psychopathic serial killer persona."

"Do you realize what you're asking?"

"Yes. You're not a boy scout just like I'm not a girl scout. We're independent, not with either company ordering us around and telling us what we can or can not do. This will be us, at our best, doing the things that we want to do. Everything is on our own terms."

"Elle, I don't know if I can go along with this..." Gabriel trails off.

"Gabriel!" Elle can't believe her ears. Wordlessly, she stomps off to their bedroom and slams the door shut.

Gabriel sighs as he leans back in his chair and stares at uneaten food on his plate.
---
The couch is his bed that night. He tosses and turns, unable to fall asleep, Elle's words resonating in his mind. "We have abilities. We can do whatever we want, take whatever we want.".

Gabriel sits up and places his legs on the floor. He rests his elbows on his legs, face in his palms. Elle was right. He wasn't meant for this life, at least not anymore. Maybe back when he was the Gabriel Gray that Elle had rescued. But that had changed after Elle had brought Trevor. Trevor...that name still made him clench his fists.

His life post Trevor has been exciting. Nothing could compare to the feeling of newly learned powers coursing through his body. God, that feeling was like a high he couldn't get enough of. The only thing better was reuniting with Elle.

Gabriel stands up and makes his way to the bedroom door. Twisting the knob, he finds it unlocked and steps in. Elle is sleeping in their bed and with her blonde hair fanned around her, she looks ethereal. He quietly walks to the bed and gently sits down, watching her sleep. He raises his hand and gently strokes the hair around her face.

At his touch, Elle wakes up and sees him sitting on the bed.

"Gabriel?" she sleepily murmurs. She sits up and rubs the sleep out of her eyes. After studying Gabriel's face, a slow smile spreads across her face. "I knew you'd see things my way."
---
They decide to ditch their apartment in the city and travel. Having long ditched the stolen car from the rental agency, they need another vehicle. They stroll along the streets of New York in search of a car.

"Oh, let's go there!" Elle points across the street to a foreign car dealership.

Once inside the dealership, they both admire the array of cars in the showroom. Elle is particularly drawn to one, a hard top convertible in midnight blue sitting just outside the showroom. She tugs on Gabriel's arm and directs his attention to it.

"May I help you?" a friendly voice asks.

Elle and Gabriel turn around to face a young, freshfaced salesman. "Why, yes. I'm really interested in that car over there."

"Oh yes, the convertible. It's a great choice. Why don't you follow me and we can sit down and discuss this?"

Ten minutes later, Elle grows impatient and gives Gabriel a slight imperceptible zap on the hand. His eyes flicker over to her and then back to the salesman. "Listen, we want the car today."

"Uh, but the paperwork will take a few days to process and we need to do a credit check..."

"You don't seem to understand," Gabriel stands up. "I said, we want the car today."

Suddenly the salesman goes flying across the room, hitting the wall with a thud. Everyone else in the building looks up with surprise and fear starts mounting. An energy ball flying across the room takes out the security cameras and everyone in the building is scared speechless and motionless. Elle grabs a set of keys and heads out the door. Gabriel soon follows. He finds Elle leaning against the hot little convertible with a smirk on her face. As he walks towards her, he mentally seals the doorways of the dealership, leaving the people inside trapped temporarily.

He and Elle hop into the car and with tires squealing, they take off.

"What do we do now?" Gabriel asks as he navigates the busy traffic of midtown Manhattan.

Elle merely grins and digs through her purse. She pulls out a cell phone and waves it around in the air. "I still have the cell phone Arthur gave us." Flipping it open, she scans the contacts list. "And wouldn't you love to know that it's loaded with names and numbers of people like us." She snaps the phone shut and turns to look at Gabriel.

He gives her a sideways glance, a hint of a smile playing on his lips as he catches her meaning. "Are you going to be okay with lots of blood and brain matter?"

Her left hand covers his hand that's slightly wrapped around the gear stick. "I wouldn't be suggesting it if I wasn't."

"Then who is our first target?"

February

They decide to play a game of cat and mouse with Angela and Arthur. It's too easy, their shared knowledge of Primatech and Pinehearst always keeps them one step ahead. What better way to show their displeasure towards the Petrelli elders than to do the very things they were afraid of? They had wanted to contain Gabriel, keep him from feeding on powers so he wouldn't become too powerful for them to defeat.

They spend the month of February driving around the Northeast coast, wreaking havoc where they go. Police reports tell of victim's bodies having been burned, scalped, or both. Newspapers dub them the new Bonnie and Clyde. Gabriel and Elle each get a good laugh out when they read articles about their "escapades".

"Ew, this is a terrible drawing of me," Elle wrinkles her nose as she studies the police sketch. "They gave me a huge chin. I look ugly!" She flips to the sketch of Gabriel. "At least your sketch kinda looks like you. They have the eyebrows down perfectly."

"Hey now..."

"You know I love them. You're the only one that can pull it off so well," she says sweetly as she leans over and kisses him on the cheek. "But I do wish you'd get a haircut..."

"And what is wrong with my hair?"

"Nothing...just that if you ever run out of gel, you're going to have Peter's old hair. And thank goodness Daddy had me cut it," Elle remarks flippantly. "I just think you look much sexier when it's shorter and spikier," she grins widely at him.

"Hrmph" is Gabriel's only response. But out of the corner of her eye, she sees Gabriel looking at his reflection in the rearview mirror.

---

"So where's the special?"

"In this strip mall over here." Elle directs.

Gabriel pulls into the parking lot and eyes each store. "Elle, there's nothing here except a florist, a hair salon, a video rental store, and a Chinese restaurant. You're telling me a special is located here?"

"Yup, right in there," Elle points to the flower shop.

"The florist? What kind of powers could this person possibly have? They make flowers grow faster or they can turn themselves into a plant?"

"Well, I think the term is called plant growth and manipulation. This guy, Edwin Jackson, was one of the ones on Level 5."

"Really?" Gabriel stares at the storefront as he ponders the abilities. He wasn't so interested in the plant growth but plant manipulation could prove to be something entirely useful if need be. "I want to see this for myself."

Gabriel and Elle return to the strip mall later that night to find the florist still in his shop. A locked door is no problem for either of them and when they walk in, they find the florist in a back room surrounded by boxes of soil. They both remain quiet as they watch flowers grow and bloom within seconds.

"Nice ability," Gabriel remarks.

The florist jumps at the sound of his voice and turns around. "Who are you?"

Elle wants to giggle at the florist's appearance. A pair of glasses are perched on his nose, his dark hair looking like it hasn't seen a comb in ages, and a pair of dirty jeans and a flannel shirt adorn his large body. Even Gabriel had never looked that bad.

"We're here for your power, Edwin." Gabriel smiles sadistically. He raises a hand but before he can do his thing, a root protrudes from Edwin's leg and twists around both Gabriel and Elle, trapping their arms down by their sides.

"No! You're from that company, aren't you? I am not going back to the company to be locked up in those dark prisons. Not away from my plants!"

"Oh, you're not going back to the company," Elle manages to squeeze out some electricity from her hand. "I know one of your weaknesses is fire. And lucky for me, I can burn you to a crisp if I wanted to." Her small electric bursts are enough to get Edwin to loosen his hold on the two. With some room, Elle is able to maneuver her arm free and extends it to send a bigger blast directly to Edwin's body.

Immediately, he staggers back and the roots return to his body as his concentration is broken. Gabriel takes this time to hold Edwin in place and he raises his finger. A sickening sound is heard as a branch pierces through Gabriel's chest and Elle's eyes widen in horror.

"Gabriel!"

He looks down and sees a branch impaling his body. Looking back up at Edwin, he sees fear in the man's eyes when he realizes that Gabriel isn't dead. "You honestly don't think that you can stop me so easily, can you?"

"What? How?" The man stammers.

Gabriel just gives Edwin a knowing smile and raises his finger once again. This time, the sounds of bone being cut and a man's agonizing screams are the only things being heard.

---

"Why are we breaking in here?"

"So I can do this," Elle pushes Gabriel into a chair and grabs a pair of scissors off the counter in front of her. She immediately starts snipping at his hair, dark locks falling onto the floor.

Thirty minutes later, she walks around and studies him. "Much better," she grins.
