Wendy Garret couldn't help looking back at the deserted town. It had served them well, one way or another. A chill wind blew past her, and she shuddered. Her nose tickled, but this time, she didn't sneeze. She was definitely much better now.

"Are you...really all right?"

She turned to look at her traveling companion as the wind toyed with his tuxedo tails. As always, Van seemed as though he was ready to fall asleep at a minute's notice, but there was something different about that usually blank expression on his face, most notably his eyes. They were still the same shade of brown with a dash of red, but it wasn't the color that got her...it was the look in them that was different.

Wendy knew she saw it before...in fact, just a night ago, so everything was still vivid in her memory. Dann of Thursday lying in the snow as she rushed towards it...catching a cold...meeting Metsä of Tuesday and its pilot...and most of all, that look in Van's eyes when he sat in front of the fireplace, twiddling something that resembled an ordinary puzzle, while Wendy rested underneath his tuxedo, her only blanket.

For a fleeting moment, she wondered where the man who had always forced her to go home and constantly forgot her name went. And who was this person beside her, taking his place? Nah, seriously, he was still the same Van she had met back at Evergreen, the Van who freaked out when she offered to be his bride, the Van who always asked for all the condiments, abstained from alcohol, constantly saved her from trouble...

In a way, he did save her from trouble again. Trouble did come in many shapes and sizes, and a cold was one of them.

"Wendy?"

The girl blinked, and was once again standing at the outskirts of the town. How long did she let her mind wander - and forget that she was staring at Van, who had just said her name. That was another thing - it felt like only yesterday that he finally said it, instead of simply referring to her as "you" or "the girl".

"Oh...I'm fine now," she answered, nodding. "Thanks...thanks again. You know, for taking care of me and everything."

Van didn't say anything in reply, but simply nodded and continued walking on. Wendy watched him first before following him, dragging her suitcase along. Kameo whined; the puzzle thing that Van had given to her was bumping up against the tortoise, who now had to share his space with it as both of them dangled from her neck.

Thank you, she repeated mentally. Guess I just have to find a place to put it. Maybe when Kameo gets too big, I can wear it like a necklace...

Chuckling at the thought of her pet and lucky charm suddenly growing large enough for her to ride on, Wendy hastened to keep up with Van, as they finally placed the town behind them.
