"And...checkmate. I win again."
The white king whipped off his crown, throwing it at the feet of the black queen, who had successfully cornered him. Hermione Granger stared at them for a while before looking up at her opponent.
"That was...amazing!" she couldn't help saying. "That's three games! I thought I already had your king...I had my knight, my pawn, my rook...they were all guarding the - oh."
Ron Weasley chuckled. "You shouldn't have moved them like that, all you got were a few pawns. That's fine and all, but not fine if your king goes unprotected." He patted said piece on his head and watched it shake a tiny fist at him and his queen. "But don't worry, it took me a while to learn, too. If you want...we can work on your strategy."
From the corner of her eye, Hermione saw Lavender Brown shoot them a furtive glance before going back to her Divination assignment with Parvati Patil. Somehow, Hermione felt like smirking back at her, but turned back to Ron instead.
"Really?"
"That is...unless you've still got some homework to do," he replied, winking. "I can't let you slack off on your schoolwork, can I?"
Hermione smiled, but quickly rearranged her expression into a straight face and said, "If you do, I'll tell McGonagall."
Ron laughed. "But I know you're done with your homework. Knowing you."
"Yeah..."
She gasped as he leaned over their board and kissed her on the cheek. At first, Hermione was struck with a sudden urge to slap him, but eventually it ebbed away, and she smiled, feeling as though her face was on fire.
And she was liking the sensation.
Hermione wondered if Lavender was looking their way again.
Checkmate, she thought triumphantly, as she turned back to where Ron was fixing the pieces again.
