- That was a big bundle of pretty. I thought of it as a cinematic PWP -- breathtaking cinematography, not much of a plot but oooh boy, it was beautiful. I love the attention they paid to the visuals. After watching the same set-ups and framing day in and day out, it's nice to have a change once in a while.
- I remember reading about this film months ago, back when I was taking Intro to Ancient Greece; at the time I really noticed what the movie was about, we were going over the Battle of Thermopylae, so history geekery helps with my enjoyment. However, given that it's a movie, and it's Frank Miller, naturally this enjoyment gets diminished with details and accuracy and... Frank Miller. The other day in my Feminist Sci-Fi class we were discussing how men show emotion on the battlefield, in war, in regards to one another, and how that's fine, but otherwise no. This movie came up. One of the students started talking about it and I hadn't seen it, saying they showed affection for each other (which I'd read into upon seeing it because 300 men in loincloths + fandom affected brain = a given) and I then said, really, with Frank Miller, dude who wrote Sin City and who made Batman a jerk? At that point my dorkiness was confirmed in class and about four guys laughed 'cause they knew what I was talking about.
There was a point, it being historical inaccuracies and crack about boy lovers aside, it's Frank Miller so I expected the half naked Oracle and appreciated the pretty, including 300 men in loincloths.
- Dear Gerard Butler,
Hi.
I missed you.
Um... I apologize for my inappropriate behavior? You knocked it right out of the park, baby, and I'm happy for you and that this film did well.
Sincerely,
ignited
P.S. Directing all complaints of blasting PotO soundtrack in celebration towards you; you'll fend 'em off with your sparkly teeth and beard, all righty?
- Astinos looked like a grown-up version of Atreyu. I kept expecting him to have a touching scene with a horse. Or Keanu Reeves, as my mom pointed out. I think that's because we watched Bill & Ted recently. So Astinos = late 80's sci-fi pretty boy?
- I think David Wenham was great, but his narration and some of the color palette/shots used made me feel like I was watching RotK at times which wasn't that bad. If you ignored the giant friggin' elepants and rhinos and Persians' costumes
- We're studying Xerxes in my Archaeology class and that was the most random but cool departure ever. Only the giant towering manbeast in eyeliner isn't something I'd normally go with on Xerxes (though I'd see that for Akhenaten, also random, but studying Egypt now) and yet it worked. The spear slicing his skin and his reaction seemed like what the movie was building towards -- not just a show of courage, of standing up to impossible odds but making this self-proclaimed god realize he's flesh and blood like everyone else as he's too far gone to notice until he feels the blood running down his face.
- Spartan women FTW. Very happy Queen Gorgo got a bigger part and I loved that line about Spartan warriors coming from equally strong Spartan women. Damn straight.
I've got a kink, we all know that, so I was lucky to see three films that satisfy this:
Dating The Enemy: Best one out of three, hands down. Works as a romantic comedy besides the intial trick of bodyswitching boyfriend and girlfriend. The only other Guy Pearce movies I've seen are The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and The Count of Monte Cristo (and a little bit of The Time Machine) so who the hell am I to judge how his acting is with those examples (though Priscilla wins, hands down, at being sheer joy) but he was wonderful here. It reminded me of a bodyswitch fic played out on film -- not too silly, deals with actual repurcussions and not just for the sake of comedy. If you can rent it, I highly recommend it for a laugh.
It's A Boy Girl Thing: I finally got a copy of this a few weeks ago and it was just what I expected: teen movie and guilty pleasure. It's not the best film ever but it's funny and Kevin Zegers is hilarious. They might have gone overboard on the girl thing -- crying more than once? -- but I didn't have any high expectations after reading some reviews and enjoyed it on its own merits. Only thing I would've liked were more dealing with the differences and getting rid of the convenient switch back before the ending. However, after that? I'm yearning for a sequel fic in which they go on the road and sexual hijinks ensue in dirty motels.
...That's probably because I've been reading a LOT of Wincest lately.
Zerophilia: Low budget indie genderswap story with an interesting premise. If you can rent it, give it a shot -- about a boy who discovers he's a Zerophiliac, meaning he can change sexes at will. Nice twist and interesting ending. It's the stuff of fanfic, people, which lends to its charm.
All this has lead to recs in new memory categories, a lot of old fic by other's standards but I'm just catching up to them now: SPN
genderswitch &
bodyswitch. Please, John Shiban, make me happy and
do a bodyswitch ep of the boys. Because I have to hold out on wishing for an ep that presses my own kink (or crack, whatever, thank you AtS and your Puppet Angel, you and I will always be BFF, for reals).
I think I'll quit bullshitting about it and make an icon comm already to make it easier & motivate to post. Or be nice and share my personal delusions of perverse art grandeur crap with the rest of the class. Though I'm happy about the
last batch, having them pile up annoys the hell out of me. Thinking of a name that isn't ridiculous or make me want to smash things, that's the problem.
Last, but not least: put Dark Angel on my Netflix queue for Alec and bought S1 of Supernatural at Best Buy for the Paley Festival DVD. And here we have confirmation. No need to send help, I have gone off to my happy place.
