a con, tentacles, and a howl.

Yesterday, gotravel and I went to the Big Apple Con and had a fantastic time. Tickets were free as it was the 10th anniversary of the con, so first time + free entrance = already off to a good start. There were too many comic books, toys, DVDs, badges and pins and it was geek heaven AND they had Beatles stuff, making it that much more cooler. Besides the various toys, trade paperbacks (Young Justice! Sins Of Youth! Yay!) and pins I got, I picked up some comics (including oddly enough, that tentacle World's Finest one -- I didn't even KNOW it was the tentacle one and lo and behold, I open, and boom, tentacles and metaphors.) We also bought some nice movie posters, including Bowie and Beatles. It was a lovely experience and I vote yes to cons. Although costumes, that's another thing. (Though we did see a girl as Catwoman, only sans tail, which means she's um. One of those tail-less cat...young woman, instead.)

I finally watched Howl's Moving Castle today. My God, what an amazing film. I loved Miyazaki's other films like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away so I was excited about seeing this one. Actually meant to see it a few months ago -- got it from Netflix, but real life got in the way and I ended up returning it before I could watch it. Then I managed to get a hold of it and watched it and I'm still blown away. In that sort of good, all melty, what the hell just happened, zoned out and thinking about it for hours sort of way. Now I'll be kicking myself for not having read the book it's based on already (I read some random fantasy novels years ago, but never the more popular ones, I guess?) but I'll definitely pick it up when I go to Barnes & Noble next time!

I really need to buy this movie. The fantasy elements and the animation were all twisty and psychedelic in a cracktastic way that I love -- half the time it didn't seem to make sense, but it did, and it was such an AMAZING... experience. I can't describe it. I know that's probably due to the book material itself but Miyazaki always pulls off these amazing stories and yay for this. One of my favorite animated films now. But I really need to buy it so I can watch it in Japanese too (English cast was amazing -- cue Christian Bale OMG HOWL BEST JARETH-ESQUE CHARACTER EVER squee) and the special features.

Resisting the urge to watch it again, now. Sleep is good. Non-spoiler-wise, the movie was jaw dropping story-wise and beautiful animation wise so if you haven't seen it already (pfft, I'm probably one of the few) and love a good fantasy, go.

The urge to check IMDB to see if there's any upcoming fantasy books turned into movies (that aren't already well known/reported on a lot) is tempting and horrifying. ::eyes Ella Enchanted:: It could go so, so wrong. So wrong...
