i saw your smile
maybe it was near that 800th mile
and so,
i saw your teeth
maybe it was your laugh, paused in the dark of the night
and i hold this space, rocked it in my arms like teardrop held on a cheek
i saw your hair on your neckline and traced it with my fingertips
felt your upper lip
the clank of our teeth
maybe it was a passing time
fond like kind of memory
and when those senses do everything but forget and fade for me
i'll hold this space
promised i'd hold this space
i'll keep my teeth looking straight
keep away the hornet's nest
sing to my silent audience
whisper muddled words to you in your sleep
danced with you from the sun into the rain
featherweight and flight all the way from there to here in my dream
i baked cookies
served a cold glass of milk
i washed the sheets and fluffed the pillows
lilacs in the bedroom air
laid out an unwrinkled shirt
forgetting moments to remember with new fondness
finishing sentences
for what it's worth
