Summary: He was the first thing she thought of when she knew what had to be done.

He was the first thing she thought of when she knew what had to be done.

It wasn't his smile, his laugh, or the way if felt to lay against his chest that bore it's way into her mind. No, it was his past. His pain. The thick, nauseating knowledge of what he was going to go through. What he had already been through. It had been a couple of years, but she knew it was still fresh. She knew and she didn't know how to make him go through it again.

She could tell herself it was different. Tell herself it wasn't love. They had never exchanged the words, never even spoken of being faithful to one another. So really, how dare she compare the two?

She dared because she did love him.

She had been running from the fact for a long time, but nothing will make you see the truth quite like a piece of wood through your chest. It was somewhere in the white-hot pain, the blurred eyesight, and the desire to ease into sleep that she felt it. It was like Doyle was beating that rod into her again, but this time right through the heart. She felt it slam, slam, slam into her.

She did love him. She loved him and she didn't want to leave him alone.

When she woke later JJ was at her side. They were in an ambulance and she had a mask over her mouth feeding her air. JJ's hand was around hers tightly and all she could do was listen to the blond's words and nod along. She knew. She knew it had to be done, that there was no other option. Emily Prentiss had to be dead.

And her first thought was him.

Maybe she was giving herself too much credit. Maybe he could live with losing her better than she first imagined. Maybe she didn't mean to him what he meant to her.

Maybe.

That maybe wasn't setting her at ease any, because either way she was going to be dead to him.

Her hand gripped tighter to her friend's hand. She could feel herself slipping towards unconsciousness again, and with it she felt herself in his arms again.

“Don't do that to me again,” he murmurs.

“Mmm, what?” She's in a fog, but a good fog. A fog that comes after a long night of fantastic sex against several odd surfaces. Her fingers brush against the hard definitions of his chest and she can feel his hand gliding down her back.

“Take off like that.”

She pushes herself up to lean on his chest and look at him. She can feel the warmth in her cheeks, the corners of her lips hurt at how wide she smiles. “Or what? You'll come all the way out here, push the door in, and have your way with me again?”

He's smiling, but it doesn't reach his eyes. His hands rest on her hips and his eyes find hers. “Say goodbye next time, okay?”

She nods, leaning in to brush her lips to his. “I'll say goodbye next time.” She starts to shift, her hips moving over his, settling until their bodies connect.

She feels his hips rise to meet her and he groans softly as his words get lost against her mouth. “Promise?”

“Promise,” she murmurs.

No, she couldn't do it to him. She couldn't let him think she was dead. She couldn't be dead to him, because she didn't want to stop being a part of his life. Even though she knew she had no choice.

She started to fight the sleepiness and grab for the mask on her face. JJ reached forward, speaking soothing words to calm her, but she wouldn't hear it. She shook her head, and when she got her lips free, her words came out hoarse.

“No.”

“Emily, ssh. It's okay. It'll be okay, I promise.”

“Tell him,” she pushed out. “You have to-...tell him.”

“Who? Don?” JJ knew. She was the only one who knew, but she knew what kept Emily going back to New York. She had been the one to call him and tell him Emily was missing, because she knew what her friend felt for him even if she didn't know herself. JJ knew he had to be there.

“Tell him I kept my promise...I didn't leave without saying goodbye.” She wasn't sure how she was getting her words out, but she had to. If they were going to fake her death, he had to know the truth.

“Okay. Okay, I will. Just-”

“Tell him. Please. Tell him I didn't do it.”
