Okay, so, throught the various blogs I read, I came across an interesting piece of news. Amazon.com is selling (and apparently publishing, through a self-publish/on-demand publishing subsidiary) a book of poetry by a self-proclaimed pedophile about, you guessed it, pedophilia. Showed up late last year. Amazon is, from what I can tell, defending their choice to publish it on a "freedom of speech" basis.
Am I behind the times? Has anybody else heard of this? A search on "viamund" will, in fact, pull up the item in question on their site. That's as close as I'm getting to linking to it. Thankfully, it also pulls up one other book, as a salve to my conscience.
Amazon.com appears to be one of the, if not simply the, only major online book store selling this collection of words. Is it unreasonable for me to cancel my amazon.com card, delete my wishlist, and do my best to never again do business with amazon.com?
I've already sent an email to amazon's customer service, saying that I'm watching events, and preparing to take my business elsewhere. Should I even bother waiting for them to respond?
I'll have to talk this over with my better half tonight. I'd be displeased at the loss of amazon.com as a shopping resource. But I find the fact that they're publishing the book quite sickening.
UPDATE EDIT:
As Rev-E posted below, the author is, in its own words, "out" as a pedophile. Defends the practice, supports it, etc etc etc. We'll see whether his thoughts about Amazon.com bowing to public pressure bear out. It's still true that, regardless of amazon's eventual response, other companies, including b&n & buy.com, have responded much more quickly to customer complaints.
