✢ The Character
Character Name: The Master (Harold Saxon)
Fandom: Doctor Who
Canon Point: Last of the Time Lords
Age: 905

Appearance: Short hair, elaborate facial expressions, rather short, stubby handed and has been compared to owls and cats. Also view here - John Simm

Abilities / Powers: The Master is not human but rather an alien from the planet Gallifrey. As a Time Lord, the Master has an outstanding knowledge of time and space, beyond that of even the smartest men on Earth. They study for centuries at the Time Lord academy and therefore they are naturally more intelligent and worldly, with better understanding and awareness of the universe and time travel. The Master has extensive knowledge of science, engineering, languages and literature.

He also benefits from the Time Lord biology such as regenerations. Conventionally, most Time Lords have 12 regenerations but the Master has never been conventional and despite ending his cycle, he survived by stealing bodies until he was finally executed by the Time Lord. When brought back for the Time War, he got a brand new set of 12 regenerations. Regenerations generally allow a Time Lord a sort of 'get out of jail free' card when it comes to death, the catch being that they often change personality, preferences and appearance though retain the same memories and knowledge. This process can also be done by will and sometimes some Time Lords display a higher level of control on what body they get.

His appearance is humanoid (or more accurately, humanities appearance is very Time lord-ish as the Time Lords came first) but his biology differs greatly in most respects. He has two hearts, a repository bypass, a naturally lower body temperature than humans, an ability to withstand radiation and better hearing and smell than humans.

All Time Lords have a mild telepathy in canon, though the strength varies greatly, it is usually initiated by touch and the Master is known to use his more than the Doctor and seems to have a high level of skill as he is able to send a false premonition as a telepathic message and his hypnotism skills are far more effective.

Inventory: Laser Screwdriver.
Jelly babies.
Mobile phone.

Personality: The Master, as a person, is psychotic and fairly mentally unstable. This is the most blatant aspect of his personality in this particular regeneration. While he can come across as charming, polite and even quite a nice man, it is obvious to those who know him that its all an act, one that he is often successful at pulling off. So much so that he managed to run for prime minister without many doubting his persona of Harold Saxon. He excels in manipulating those around him to achieve whatever outcome he wants. He used to hypnotise people into falling in line and doing as he said but in the latest canon he seems to rely more on his own charm and cunning.

He displays little, if any, empathy for the victims of his schemes. He is shown as having little regard for those outside himself and only seems to care about his own self preservation. His sadistic nature is apparent from the way he can take such joy in the misery and suffering of others, treating things such as death and torture as something to be amused by. His humour is dark and malicious with a childish air to it, showing him to be quite playful and hyper at times, much like the tenth Doctor. This incarnation matches Ten in most aspects of personality, especially their eccentric nature and he is simply the flip side of the coin when it comes to morality and empathy. He is the equal opposite and matches the Doctor as a worthy opponent. Despite all his show and bravado, he simply fears being bested by the Doctor. Or anyone really, his ego is very important to him and having it damaged doesn't go down well.

While he may act immature at times, he is a very intelligent and calculated man who puts a lot of thought into his plans, even if his ego is often his failing. He is too self assured and arrogant to acknowledge any possibility of losing, which makes his failure twice as painful. He doesn't have a problem with playing dirty and using any means necessary if he is in a tricky situation. He even ran from the Time war after being brought back solely to fight in it as his life meant more to him that his home planet. His cowardice is ever present in canon and he is well known for retreating when things get dangerous or over his head. His pride means a lot to him, he won't even let the Doctor forgive him and refused to show any weakness to his enemies, especially not the Doctor. Being weak and helpless is not something the Master enjoys.

The Masters intelligence is one of his greatest assets, he was very successful at school and out shone the Doctor in most subjects. Its said that his degree in cosmic science was of a higher class than the Doctors and previous canon indicates that he is somewhat of a maverick when it comes to engineering, in practise and theory. For example, he came up with the entire premise of the Archangel network, which helped him take over the entire Earth with a sort of mass hypnotism. Even when fobwatched, he managed to build a ship system with food and string and staples.

The Master has lost a lot of his sanity over the years, which is often considered to be because of drums impact on his mind. His moods seem rather flippant and he often switching between a manic happiness and frustrated anger, which could be because of how the drums impact his thoughts as he often claims it can be hard to think. He is constantly torment and unable to get the rhythm out of his head, it even sneaks into unconscious actions such as drumming on the table.

This may give him a reason for his sadistic and petty ways but it doesn't exactly make him redeemable. Its not completely and utterly impossible but its honestly not probable.

This regeneration of the Master may seem charming and friendly on the outside, perhaps a little sharp witted and sarcastic, but his deep psychotic nature is something that can be quite fearful and dangerous.

History: Here and here!

First Person Sample:[There's slight noise of movement as the Master fiddles with the device, mumbling to himself as he inspects it and tries to turn it on. So, until he's done, enjoy a shot of his fingers moving around. Not exactly exciting stuff.]

Huh. This is definitely interesting. As charming as this little phone is, I don't recall purchasing it-- Oh! There we are!

[Flipping it over, the video moves back to reveal the smirking face of the Master. He wasn't actually as happy or as comfortable as he was trying to pass himself off as being but never show your cards in a new situation.]

Look, I appreciate a dastardly plot as much as the next man but this is all a bit much, isn't it? Bringing me back for this? Really? My, My, I thought I had a God complex. I have to say, I would love to meet whoever is responsible, I bet you peg yourself just brilliant? A proper genius? Well no. Sorry! That position is already filled.

[By himself. No one could snare him in their little resurrection trap. He didn't care if he was here to be a medical guinea pig or being punished for something - nothing would keep him here.]

Now, I think I need to have a little chat with whoever is responsible, don't you agree? And, perhaps, if there happens to be any, oh I don't know, Doctors around? Well, I need a consultation.

Third Person Sample: There was something oddly mundane about having everything. Having it eliminated his need to achieve it and thus gave him a bit too much free time. The devil makes use of idle hands, after all. Was it any wonder his day had whittled down to simply making outrageous and near impossible requests to his men to watch them scramble before choosing a poor soul to torment?

Two of his favourite souls were, of course, his dearest Lucy and his favourite arch enemy. Now Lucy was interesting, amusing as a worthless companion could be, but very breakable. That was the set back that put him off playing. He didn't want to destroy her just yet. The Doctor could maintain a stoic front despite everything. And it compelled him more than anything. Perhaps that's why he kept pestering him?

Which explained why, at 6am he was stalking across the Valiant in a childish manner, giddy at the prospect of killing a sleepless night with a new game to play with his favourite arch enemy.

Sadly the tent where he kept the Doctor was an eye-sore, it cluttered the Valiant and it was not exactly presentable but then, what was one to do with a dog? Chain it up to the rails? Now that could encourage people to pet it or sneak it scraps. It was definitely not at option or he'd have a mutiny on hand. The tent kept him safely out the way and easy to locate, it was hard to miss but it was worth ruining his décor.

If he was painfully honest, he was solely doing all of this just to humiliate his enemy. All those times he was forced to beg for his life and all those embarrassing defeats made him very petty. Standing of the tent, he could hide his own mocking smile.

"I think its time you get up, lazy bones. Open those eyes and look alive, we have things to do, my dear Doctor, and I'm a little tired of all of this sulking. You'll have to talk to me sometime," he couldn't ignore the Master forever. He could try but he'd never succeed.
