"Sanada..." Yukimura trails off disapprovingly as he waits for Sanada's coughing fit to cease. It's becoming more frequent nowadays, and Rikkaidai can't afford such a thing with the tournament just around the corner.
Sanada knows that.
"It's becoming cold lately," he mumbles as he buttons up his uniform. "You don't have to worry, I'm taking my medicine properly."
"I'm not worried," Yukimura insists, as both of them packs up their jersey.
Sanada nods in reply, and when the clubroom is locked and the sky is a mix of orange and blue, they walk home together like they always do.
Yukimura doesn't comment when Sanada excuses himself between coughs, and simply continues on with what he was saying about Kirihara's backhand.
Rikkaidai does not lose, and Sanada knows that, so Yukimura doesn't feel the need to remind him.
The next morning, Yukimura frowns at the raspy voice at the other end of the telephone line.
"My mother won't let me get out of bed," Sanada says dryly.
"Listen to your mother," Yukimura replies, just as dryly, but can't resist the worried sigh that escapes him afterwards.
"Don't worry, it's just a cold. It'll go away in the morning."
"I'm not worried," Yukimura says, "I'll inform the teachers. Get some rest."
It is a cold morning today, Yukimura notes absently. That afternoon, Yukimura leaves the duty of closing up the clubroom to Yanagi in spite of himself.
Yanagi smiles slightly. "Genichirou will be fine."
"I'm not worried," Yukimura mutters insistently.
Yanagi nods and refrains from saying that he never said he was and watches as Yukimura hurries away.
"Yanagi-sempai," Kirihara walks up behind him and glances at Yukimura's disappearing back. "You said fukubuchou will be fine, right?"
"Were you eavesdropping, Akaya?"
"Hey! Anyone can hear you when you're talking outside, you know," Kirihara huffs indignantly. It makes Yanagi chuckle.
"Yes, yes. Genichirou will be fine," he repeats, then pauses for a bit. "Are you worried?"
It takes a moment or two for Kirihara to reply, and when he does, his voice is quiet and small but his answer is clear. "Yeah."
Yanagi ruffles his kohai's hair and thinks what a wonder it is how Yukimura might learn a thing or two from their precious little ace.
Yukimura arrives at the Sanada household just a little bit out of breath, but he regains his composure when Sanada-san opens the door and greets him with a loving smile. Yukimura smiles back and bows a little, apologizing for the intrusion.
"My, you know you're always welcome here, Yukimura-kun," Sanada-san laughs, ushering him in. "Genichirou is in his room. Please wait for a bit and I'll bring you two some tea."
"Thank you very much."
Sanada is sitting on his bed when Yukimura enters, and he's just the slightest bit surprised. "Yukimura? What are you doing here?"
Yukimura frowns as he puts his tennis bag down beside Sanada's. "Checking if you were getting some rest like I told you to. Good thing I did, too." He raises an eyebrow at the history book on Sanada's lap.
Sanada puts the book aside when Yukimura moves to sit on the side of the bed and refuses to comment.
"How was practice?"
Yukimura sighs tiredly. "Get well soon, Sanada."
Sanada nearly lets loose a small smile. "Don't worry."
"I'm not," Yukimura replies, but checks Sanada's temperature with his hand just in case.
People think that it's Sanada who clings to Yukimura, but Yukimura knows that it's ironic how it's the other way around.
