Jesus, we're on ep 8 already? Only five more to go *sob* (If Global airs them all... fuckers)
My ratings so far:
Pilot: 5/10
Harry Has a Wife: 7/10
Don't Wanna Die: 9/10 (to give me a lil space upwards)
Sound of a Strap: 8/10
Tears Bring Harry: 7/10
Where’s the Line: 6/10
Everyone's a Hostage to Somebody: 9/10
In the Dark: 7/10
Another really good ep, of course, though not quite as great as last week's.
It was really cool to get an ep that focused on Amy as much as on Ben as I really, really like her. Again, wonderful mix of case and character stuff with the character developments outweighing the case for me (though obviously one was tied to the other).
I liked how I, as a viewer, was just as convinced as Amy was that the Prof was the rapist, so it became more about how to get him as opposed to the usual whodunnit. Well played.
Horrible case again, handled really well.
Only five more eps to go, so things are starting to unravel (though I worry that the next one being aired is actually ep 12, so they might just show ep 13 after and the ten out of 13 ep rumor was true). Cannot wait where we will end up by the end of the season.
Hightlights:
- same song as every week, but Ben and Doc; especially Ben going from angry to kind of chastised, while Doc always remained calm
- speaking of, angry!Ben is sexay!
- not showing Ben's first blackout in this ep - puts us in his shoes (+ I just liked this shot)
- Ben and Amy in the car - wonderful performance by both and really touching (though it does seem unfair that Amy has to explain her unusual behavior in this while Ben continually gets away with his)
- Ben supporting Amy, trusting her ("Trust your gut."). Same for Pam giving them more freedom than maybe most bosses would
- nice nod to the Pilot when Amy comes in with the box of files and Ben remarks "Guess you don't travel as light as I thought." - that and the SUBTEXT of that statement
- Ben alone at the crime scene. Kind of reminded me of Manhunter ;)
- awwwww, Ben sleeping in his car - also really, REALLY reminded me of RayK for some reason
- Sam whaling on the prof - wrong but very satisfying ;) (which is what Sam is mostly...)
- Amy being able to tell the previous victim they got the bastard
Not so Good:
- the other suspect seemed redundant, though I get that was needed to highten the drama about nailing the prof for the rapes. What worked well for the prof storyline kind of backfired here, as there was no doubt in my mind that the guy was innocent (though sleazy and creepy...)
- I kind of didn't like that they made the wife a meek Asian wife, that seems like a stereotype to me for some reason
- checking the lightbulb for prints... uh, Ben's would have been all over it?
Observations:
- Super's still an ass and only gets limited screentime. Kinda odd his affair with Pam was dropped so quickly, but maybe it'll come back when he runs for mayor
- so our suspicions that Amy was sexually abused were right. And for a moment, when they were in the car, I thought Ben was going to confide in her. Mainly because they built this strong parallel between what Amy is going through and Ben ("triggers", etc). Also lays the groundwork for Amy being understanding later on.
Now I again cannot decide who he will tell first - the Doc or Amy. Unless both of them realize what's going on seperately
- the similarity between these rapes and Amy's abuse - coincidence?
- Nick continues to be brought up - that has to lead to something (though the pic on Amy's phone - LOOOL!)
- Ben's an alcoholic, maybe the Doc asking him about drug use before wasn't too far off, either
- Ben gets more and more introspective + he was an oddly distant observer throughout most of this (not just letting Amy run the show, that was a show of support, but some moments in between and particularly at the end) see? Especially compared to similar situations in Sound of a Strap
see?
SEE?
Questions:
- Hall and the red light district of Amsterdam/GILF talk - where the fuck did THAT come from? As random talk it was really... random.
- does Ben own anything aside from blue and green-ish shirts? ;)
- the drawings of lightbulbs in Ben's trailer: where they all recent? I swear I saw one in a previous ep, but need to check
- what is it about the lightbulb? Brings to mind that Ben was held in some sort of room where he looked up at a lightbulb like that when he was abused. Also on the drawing "Where were you" might tie into douchebag!mom's role from last week - as in a mother figure not helping Ben
- is that really Callum's handwriting? Seems like it ;)
Fin.
My layout's all messed up for some reason, dunno why. Sorry!
