so it turns out that part of the reason for the nasty ride on the shocks was that the back half was way stiffer than the front. i rectified that this morning and while the ride is still far from the lap of luxury, its actually pretty sexy. i wont leave it this way though. i know the butts of my passengers will be happier with the softer setting.
