Written for day three of
consci_fan_mo They were alone in Uther’s chamber as Gaius prepared a salve for his shoulder. As Gaius worked, Uther removed his top, flexing the sore shoulder. He stopped and spoke, causing Gaius to turn to him.
“You’ve always been a loyal and trusted advisor, Gaius,” Uther said and Gaius could hear so much more in the words. Or was it simply that he hoped there was still more to be heard? “I… if some of my decisions have been against your advice, I hope there is no malice between us. I would deeply regret that.”
“My lord, the burden of leadership is a heavy one and especially so for one who bears it alone. If my counsel can ease it in any way, then I am happy to serve, as always,” Gaius replied, caution couching his sentiment in courtly words.
Uther gave him a penetrating look then, one that Gaius had not seen for many a long year. There was a searching quality, as if Uther were seeking approval from Gaius.
“Loyalty is a quality I have always prized in others, Gaius. It was a shame I found myself so very lacking when it came to faithfulness myself,” Uther said sadly and turned away toward the window. Gaius was unsure if he should reply, but he did anyway.
“I’m sure that the Queen would have forgiven you, my lord. She loved you deeply and you are after all, only human.”
Uther turned and stared at him and Gaius was worried he’d said too much, overstepped his boundaries. Uther strode forward and Gaius nearly flinched. But Uther only placed a hand on Gaius’ shoulder and stared into his eyes. If they hadn’t been so close, Gaius might have missed what Uther said next, it was barely a whisper.
“I was not speaking of the Queen.”
