A political opinion

Aug 30, 2007 18:48

Growing up, I took it for granted that I was free to express political opinions without worrying that someone was keeping track of them and someday would use them to determine who got sent to the Devil's Lake Internment Camp. Those halcyon days may be fading, but I am not quite willing to be muzzled. Besides, I expect to be living in some other country before the Devi's Lake Internment Camp starts being filled with atheist subversives like me.

In that light, I am going to express my view on Sen. Craig's recent escapades. I am sure everyone is aware of his peculiar behavior in the bathroom of the Minneapolis airport, so I won't tell that story here.

His behavior lacked class and perhaps he was annoying to the men in the adjacent bathroom stall. But if lacking class was a crime, anyone who performed a "dollar dance" at their wedding would be in jail and if being annoying was a criminal offense, the majority of parents who take their children out in public would be confined at the Devil's Lake Internment Camp. The simple fact is that when there is no victim, there is no crime, and so why are people getting so upset at Sen. Craig's actions?

Part of it is no doubt the sexual puritanism that is still ubiquitous in this country. Part of it is the insufferable Christians that dominate too much of our nation's political discourse. And part of it is no doubt homophobia. Sen. Craig has declared that he is not gay-- as though we should think less of him if he is.

It all makes me tempted to move up my plans to evacuate to a more politically sensible country.
