In terms of slash pairings, you'll find a big following for him and Bobby Drake (Iceman).

Yes, and there's canoncial basis for that.

As to X3, which of your favorites did they ruin? I loved both Hank and Warren, but wished they had bigger parts.

I cant stand Ben Foster as Angel, I'm afraid. He wasn't the Warren we've all come to love. And totally not good-looking enough!

I've heard the criticism that he's too meek, and I think there's merit to that. OTOH, we see so little of him and not in situations where his self-confidence and aristocratic air would likely show. And I think he's quite beautiful.

I understand what you mean about Bobby. I thought it was a strange choice at first to make him one of the kids. OTOH, I've grown to really like that version of him.

Thanks for this summary! I've been a fan of the X-Men movies, but only just started getting into the books. I decided (due to ease of access) to start off with Ultimate X-Men and Astonishing X-Men. In the former, I was glad to see that Jean-Paul was added. I hope we see more of him in future issues.

I haven't read the Ultimates when Jean-Paul got added, although I note he's going to the same high school my daughter starts in September. Maybe they'll meet :-).

With Pyro and Colossus turning from English and Russian, respectively, in the comics to generic American in the movies, I fear they’d do the same to Jean-Paul.

Actually, in spite of his given name, Pyro is supposed to be Australian. Most Australians express pity for the poor guy upon hearing his name, as he'd be pretty well guaranteed to get badly beaten on the schoolyard with a name like St. John Allerdyce. I have never met a single Australian named St. John, nor one who considers the name one an Australian would name their child (or keep if their parents foisted it on them).

It is theoretically possible for an Englishman to have the given name St. John, but I sincerely doubt that you would find one under the age of 60. When it does show up these days, it is almost exclusively one of a string of middle names in rather pretentious families. Terry Pratchett's character Nobby Nobbs is an example of this (as much of his name as we know is given in the book Feet of Clay) and one of the grooms in Four Weddings and a Funeral (the ( ... )

I had no idea about Pyro being Australian! I've edited the post to correct that.

Hey, given the atrocious choices of names for him, it's a very understandable mistake. Allerdyce isn't exactly your typical name here either, given that those sentenced to emigration were generally Scots, Irish, Welsh, or your random poor Englishmen. Likewise most of the soldiers and prison guards were working class. Not much place for a posh name like St. John Allerdyce amongst Australia's British colonists.
