Belated Slash Premature

Jul 24, 2006 20:27

Well, that happened.

No one likes to be "defriended," especially an old lj friend, and I am genuinely sorry to think that I may have insulted a couple people I really like, including some who have slept on my couch and supped at my table. This is a topic that has been done to death on LJ, and yet I feel strangely devoid of anything to say about it. But if anyone wants to check in or register offense or anything anyway, just pop me a line- I'm at gmail. Er, guess I should have said that in the first post, oh well.

To be honest, I was thinking of starting the whole thing over under a new pseud, like some do. I miss the anonymity in some ways, and I could maybe have avoided insulting folks by letting this LJ lie fallow. But, for a variety of reasons, online anonymity isn't really an option for me any more, and it's not like I want to just walk away from the personal relationships and whatever fannish history I have. Still, the day of the massacrette was my 3-year LJversary, and once again my mind went back to the beginning, in a "what if"ish manner.

But onward and... onward. Rat's LJ, take 2 (or 5?), the year zero. Yeah, this is still largely a fandom journal:

1) Last week's Atlantis, aka old news: SGA does not have anywhere near the necessary brains or testes (metaphorical, of course; I'm sure their real ones are just lovely) to pull off "moral complexity." As far as I'm concerned, they can be as morally dubious as they want, as long as they're good at being silly and slashy. That episode was not silly but stupid and not slashy but devoid of heteroerotic energy. Elizabeth + any male character + attempted flirtation = utter catastrophe. Maybe that's why
cursive digs her- the only possible salvation for that particular irritant is lesbianism.  I've never found the Wraith even remotely interesting, and now that they are apparently supposed to be more than long haired mosquitoes, my boredom is immense.  Wah, my characters are trapped in a horrible show! Someone get them out! Oh, wait, you did.

The only thing I liked were a sequence of 2 of Whosis Picardo's scenes- the scene where Dr Wolsey aka Doctor  ... (what was he called on Voyager? Just The Doctor, as in Who?) tells Elizabeth he's going to Atlantis, and he's all nebbishy and cleans his glasses, and then seeing him flirt with Skinner Cauldwell. Theirloveissob... b.... b... bureaucratic.

2) I'm going to see JKR! With
novembersnow! On August 2! At Radio City! Hopefully John Irving will be delayed in traffic, and Stephen King will have laryngitis. And someone with 2nd row center seats will give us their tickets because they only came to hear John Irving. And then, hopefully, JKR will decide to wax poetic from the podium about online fanfic, citing all my favorite HP authors, and then she and I will (literally!) bump into each other (possible breast brushing!) and exchange pleasantries in some corridor, and she will (hopefully!) be charmed, and invite us for a late supper someplace obscure but expensive, and then
novembersnow will intrigue her with her winsome brown eyes, quiet manners, and obvious literary accumen, and so Jo will insist that we visit her in Scotland at her expense, and that we simply must bring 3 or 4 of our closest, most HP-loving friends. And we will all have a house party at her place in September and read the alternate manuscripts and outtakes for books 1-6 and admire her doodles. And then she will realize that she just has to keep us on as a team of editors to see her through book 7, so she will make our excuses at our jobs and pay us handsomely to stay in a castle for the coming year helping her with book 7. Hopefully!  *fingers crossed*

And while I was composing that, I forgot about the 2 quarts of (rather expensive, and probably last of the local) sour cherries I was simmering for preserves, and the syrup went caramel and they shriveled. They're still very nice, but not what I was aiming for. Drat. I told you I didn't have time for LJ!
