For all the media hype, I've never seen Tony Leung as the cool, calm and collected charmer he's often made out to be. He's lauded for his thespian gravitas and brooding demeanour and is as professional as they come, hardly making mention in the gossip rags.
He's come a long way, from his Duke of Mount Deer days, and of recent years, his star has been on the ascendant, with increasing prominence in art-house projects that tease and tempt, that thrill and titilate.
Pity he's always being eclipsed by his female leads.
In the Mood for Love had him playing foil to
Maggie Cheung's character in her
cheongsams which stole the thunder and made off with the whole show. In
Lust, Caution, while his bits were flashed, it was
Tang Wei who made waves out of her cheongsams in her breakout performance.
I've just not seen the appeal and attraction of the man. That is until he's gone off the market and become unavailable. (Yeah, right, like I could have had him anytime...) Yes, all of a sudden, I'm seeing what I've missed out on all these years. Now that there's a Mrs Tony Leung aka Carina Lau in the picture, it's putting the whole allure of the unattainable in perspective.
There was that press conference where he announced his plans to wed Carina after their two-decade courtship. The
craggy eyes and crinkly smile suddenly jumped out of the photo and made me do a double take. And now the
wedding photo in Bhutan, where one has to resist impure thoughts of unwrapping his layers of
traditional dress.
Now, that'll make a blockbuster: "Love, Caution: In the Mood for Lust"...
