Kurama's wiki linkCanon Point: Post series
Gender: Male
Age: it’s been stated that he is 19 at the end of the series, however, when taking account to his previous life as a demon, he is really over 3000 years old.
Birthdate/Sign: I had originally stated that Kurama’s birthday was speculated to be June 22nd, however, after more researching, I’ve concluded that the other assumed date, December 29th, is more fitting than June 22nd. My reason for changing the date is due to certain aspects regarding the two possible signs that are associated with the two dates.
In stating that Kurama’s birthday is December 29th, Kurama will fall under the sign of Capricorn. I find the sign of Capricorn to be the most appropriate for Kurama for many reasons. The first lies in the element. The original birthdate I had for Kurama would have made his element water, and I find it to be unfitting of Kurama’s character. It is stated that signs with the element of water are associated with emotions. I interpret that to be a positive aspect for the water element, and thus find it to be a contradiction to Kurama’s character, since he is known for shunning his emotions completely, rather than rely on them. In terms of the element of earth, I find this to be a more appropriate match for Kurama. It is stated that earth is the element associated with the tangible, physical realm and material needs. I find this to relate to Kurama’s character more due to the fact that he works to find precise and concrete solutions by analyzing the situation carefully and thoroughly.
Another reason I find Capricorn to be a fitting sign for Kurama lies with the lists of strengths and weaknesses. Under those lists there are certain words that I feel relate well with Kurama’s personality. These words are fearless, realistic, concerned, scrupulous, unforgiving, and very critical. In many cases, Kurama tends to be realistic when faced with a serious situation. His realistic nature shows mostly when he makes a decision on what should be done next. Likewise, he can be quite scrupulous in the sense that he is attentive to detail. This is mainly seen when he analyzes his opponents when fighting, wanting to find the smallest detail to bring them down.
Being concerned ties in mainly with his family and friends, as he shows great concern for them when they are in danger. Likewise, his concern for them also helps strengthen him, as his drive to want to protect them rises when his concern for them hits a certain point. He is also shown to be fearless in the sense that he is willing to sacrifice himself without hesitation for those he cares about. The term unforgiving ties in with how merciless he can be with others. A good example of this is in his fight with Roto. When Roto threatened to kill Kurama’s mother, Kurama showed no mercy towards him when he (Kurama) gained the upper hand in their fight. Likewise, the term unforgiving can be associated with his demon form, who is seen to be much more merciless and cruel. Finally, Kurama shows to be very critical when analyzing his opponents during a fight. It serves as a weakness due to the fact that he will not make his move until he is certain about his opponent’s fighting style. This stubbornness usually leads to him obtaining serious injuries.
When taking all of this into account of Kurama’s character, I find the birthdate December 29th and the sign of Capricorn to be the most appropriate for him.
Suitability: n/a
Power: His ability to control and manipulate plants. It was stated in canon that animal spirits possessed the ability of plant manipulation, and for Kurama, this fact is indeed true. Because he is a fox demon, Kurama shows to have great control over plants, being capable of growing a single seed in seconds by feeding it his energy. We see this mainly when he activates his infamous Rose Whip after growing a single rose from a seed, which he keeps stored in his hair.
He is also capable of controlling nearly all human-known plants, and some demon-known plants as well. We see this in his fight against Karasu. By giving his life energy to accelerate its growth, Kurama summons the Bloodsucking Plant, a plant native to the Demon World that attaches itself to its victim and drains them of their blood before blossoming into a beautiful, rose-like, flower once it has drained enough blood. He uses this plant to kill Karasu as a sort of last resort during his fight.
In his demon form, Kurama’s control over plants grows immensely, as he is able to grow large man-eating plants in less than a second. A prime of example of this is in his semi-final match against Uraurashima. In a blink of an eye, Kurama summons the Death Tree, a carnivorous tree that has acidic saliva to melt both flesh and bone easily, which grows at an incredible speed in mere seconds. Likewise, another instance of Kurama’s extreme control of plants is during his fight with Karasu. Again, we see Kurama wasting no time as he summons the Ojigi Plant, a plant that responds to movements or heat by closing its leaves around its prey and crushing it to death when grown with demon energy.
In Zodion, however, I would assume that Kurama’s ability over plants would be greatly reduced. While his ability to control them will still be great, I would imagine that the power would only go as far as accelerated growth and being able to feed his energy into seeds to grow small plants and possibly his Rose Whip. Growing larger plants such as the Ojigi Plant and the Bloodsucking Plant, however, will not be possible.
Personality: At first glance, Kurama can be seen as a soft-spoken and extremely polite teenager. He is respectful to those who are older than he is, uses honorifics when addressing others, and keeps a calm and serene tone when talking with his peers. He is also incredibly intelligent, claiming the top rank of all his classmates with his test scores. Because of his high scores, he is admired by many of his classmates, both male and female alike. This admiration has been driven all the way to the point of threatening just to join a club.
However, this behavior and lifestyle is a mask that he wears as the human Shuuichi Minamino. When not in front of the humans of his everyday life, Kurama shows a much different personality than the gentle and polite one he is known for having. Out of the four main protagonists in the series, Kurama is perhaps the most cunning and calculating. He has an analytic eye, and is capable of looking at the situation fully in order to determine what should be done next. This attribute is further seen when he engages in fights, as he chooses to study his opponent’s fighting style first in order to come up with a strategy to bring them down. Alternately, Kurama is capable of becoming emotionally detached during his fights. In doing so, it allows him to plan two or three steps ahead of his opponent to ensure victory. Likewise, he is easily capable of delivering ruthless attacks without serious thought or hesitation.
However, with every great strength, there lies a weakness. And for Kurama, it is his love and concern for his family and friends. If faced with a situation that risks the lives of those he cares for, he will do whatever it takes to ensure their safety, even if it means self-sacrifice. A prime example of this is seen when we are first introduced to him. Despite having assisted Hiei and Gouki in stealing the King’s Artifacts, he reveals that his intentions are on a completely different level than that of his partners’ and immediately cuts ties with them. With the Forlorn Hope in his possession, Kurama had intended to use its powers to cure his incredibly ill mother. It is then revealed that in order for his wish to be granted, he would have to sacrifice himself. Kurama is more than willing to oblige with the circumstances, and we see from the get-go how willing he is to give up his life for his family. Another instance where see Kurama’s weakness used against him is during the Three Kings Saga. When Yomi requests for his help, Kurama questions the possibility of him saying no, and Yomi counters by subtly threatening to end his mother and new stepfather’s lives. Not wanting to cause any harm to them, Kurama agrees to help.
His care for his family and friends works dually, however. Not only does it serve as a major weakness, it also serves as a strength. When forced to consider the safety of his family and friends, he uses their well being as a sort of support to help keep him focused on the situation at hand. His dedication to keep them safe drives him to continue onward, even if it means giving up his life.
His analytic strength and ability to shun emotion away easily stems from his demon form. When he retains his demon form, his personality becomes much colder and merciless. He enjoys toying with his opponents, something we see in his fight with Karasu, and we see how much more crueler he becomes. It should also be noted that while in his demon form he retains his intellectual abilities. In the Three Kings Saga, Yomi comments on how Kurama was very calculating and always planning three steps ahead of their enemies. We can further conclude that Kurama’s experiences as a demon is what helped him become the calculating fighter that he is now.
These characteristics, however, are only seen when Kurama is faced with serious situations. Out of all the main characters in the series, Kurama is perhaps one of the most calm and reserved. More times than not, he is seen as the voice of reason when characters bicker or panic, and he is often looked upon when in need of advice. He is also capable of showing a playful side as well, joking and teasing with his friends when the moment is appropriate. He holds a very strong bond with his mother, Shiori, who showered him with love when he was younger, resulting in his deep attachment to her. This bond with her serves to be his reason in wanting to do whatever it takes to keep her safe. His time with her, as well as his friends has noticeably softened his personality from when he was a demon. He is still capable of becoming ruthless and merciless, however, that side of him only comes out when he is severely angered.
In short, Kurama can be summarized as a character who is polite and reserved at first glance, but also calculating and cunning underneath.
