Canon Point; post series
Age; appears to be ~18-19, however, when taking account to his previous life as a demon, he is really over 3000 years old.
House;
Out of all the houses, I feel that Kurama best fits the house Odin. In the description, it states that "members of his House are intellectuals," and I find that Kurama easily meets this characteristic with his amazing intelligence.
Power; Ice Magic
Personality; At first glance, Kurama can be seen as a soft-spoken and extremely polite teenager. He is respectful to those who are older than he is, uses honorifics when addressing others, and keeps a calm and serene tone when talking with his peers. He is also incredibly intelligent, claiming the top rank of all his classmates with his test scores. Because of his high scores, he is admired by many of his classmates, both male and female alike. This admiration has been driven all the way to the point of threatening just to join a club.
However, this behavior and lifestyle is a mask that he wears as the human Shuuichi Minamino. When not in front of the humans of his everyday life, Kurama shows a much different personality than the gentle and polite one he is known for having. Out of the four main protagonists in the series, Kurama is perhaps the most cunning and calculating. He has an analytic eye, and is capable of looking at the situation fully in order to determine what should be done next. This attribute is further seen when he engages in fights, as he chooses to study his opponent’s fighting style first in order to come up with a strategy to bring them down. Alternately, Kurama is capable of becoming emotionally detached during his fights. In doing so, it allows him to plan two or three steps ahead of his opponent to ensure victory. Likewise, he is easily capable of delivering ruthless attacks without serious thought or hesitation.
However, with every great strength, there lies a weakness. And for Kurama, it is his love and concern for his family and friends. If faced with a situation that risks the lives of those he cares for, he will do whatever it takes to ensure their safety, even if it means self-sacrifice. A prime example of this is seen when we are first introduced to him. Despite having assisted Hiei and Gouki in stealing the King’s Artifacts, he reveals that his intentions are on a completely different level than that of his partners’ and immediately cuts ties with them. With the Forlorn Hope in his possession, Kurama had intended to use its powers to cure his incredibly ill mother. It is then revealed that in order for his wish to be granted, he would have to sacrifice himself. Kurama is more than willing to oblige with the circumstances, and we see from the get-go how willing he is to give up his life for his family. Another instance where see Kurama’s weakness used against him is during the Three Kings Saga. When Yomi requests for his help, Kurama questions the possibility of him saying no, and Yomi counters by subtly threatening to end his mother and new stepfather’s lives. Not wanting to cause any harm to them, Kurama agrees to help.
His care for his family and friends works dually, however. Not only does it serve as a major weakness, it also serves as a strength. When forced to consider the safety of his family and friends, he uses their well being as a sort of support to help keep him focused on the situation at hand. His dedication to keep them safe drives him to continue onward, even if it means giving up his life.
His analytic strength and ability to shun emotion away easily stems from his demon form. When he retains his demon form, his personality becomes much colder and merciless. He enjoys toying with his opponents, something we see in his fight with Karasu, and we see how much more crueler he becomes. It should also be noted that while in his demon form he retains his intellectual abilities. In the Three Kings Saga, Yomi comments on how Kurama was very calculating and always planning three steps ahead of their enemies. We can further conclude that Kurama’s experiences as a demon is what helped him become the calculating fighter that he is now.
These characteristics, however, are only seen when Kurama is faced with serious situations. Out of all the main characters in the series, Kurama is perhaps one of the most calm and reserved. More times than not, he is seen as the voice of reason when characters bicker or panic, and he is often looked upon when in need of advice. He is also capable of showing a playful side as well, joking and teasing with his friends when the moment is appropriate. He holds a very strong bond with his mother, Shiori, who showered him with love when he was younger, resulting in his deep attachment to her. This bond with her serves to be his reason in wanting to do whatever it takes to keep her safe. His time with her, as well as his friends has noticeably softened his personality from when he was a demon. He is still capable of becoming ruthless and merciless, however, that side of him only comes out when he is severely angered.
In short, Kurama can be summarized as a character who is polite and reserved at first glance, but also calculating and cunning underneath.
