Weekend Viewing: Boogiepop and Others

Apr 11, 2006 11:47

So, a little trip to Gemini Jetpack the other day ended up with me renting Boogiepop and Others, the live-action version of my favourite anime, Boogiepop Phantom.

Sane Me: Laura, this is live-action anime. Walk away.

Fangirl Me: But both the anime and the live-action are based on a novel. This should be OK.

And, luckily, it wasn't bad. It wasn't great, mind you, but I didn't feel like my rental money was wasted. It was every bit as delirious and odd that I was expecting a Japanese horror movie (Thriller? Science fiction? Its had labeling the Boogiepop...) with a D-grade budget to be. They did the smart thing of having only about three scenes with blatantly supernatural effects in them, which is good, because I snickered at the last one. High school geeks with decent computers and some graphic designer blood in them probably could've done it better, but hey, I'm not making movies so who am I to judge?
