I like the texture use in the first one a lot, but with the top image especially Cas blends into the background so much that it's hard to make him out, and the holy fire looks almost like a part of the texture rather than a cap ( ... )

I think they're definitely working! :D

#1 - I think the texture use is perfect, but I would've removed the top image of Cas, it's not very noticeable and trying to figure it out takes your attention away from the whole icon.

#2 - Amazing! I'm a sucker for negative space+good texture use and I actually think that it's not an easy combination to achieve but you have. :)

#3 - I like the texture itself but I think it's overpowering the icon. Maybe Cas should be less blue so he can stand out a bit more.

#4 - Fantastic texture use, fantastic composition and fantastic coloring. All in all fantastic icon!

#5 - Again I think the texture fits the icon perfectly and the composition is just right. I'd just remove some of the redness from Cas' face to make it look more natural.

Your icons are really amazing and I think you should really work with texture as much as possible 'cause the results are great.

I always admire your texture use - it adds so much to your icons. So hopefully I can come up with something useful for you here. XD ( ... )

These are sooo good, hun!

#1 - I've been experimenting recently but usually I don't like yellowish faces however you've made the yellow looks stunning here because the combination with blue is superb and makes the icon very vibrant and dynamic.

#2 - I adore the colors in this icon, I actually think it's the texture that's a bit overpowering.

#3 - Perfect! This is my favorite and it is absolutely flawless, imo!

#4 - I think the colors should be just a little bit stronger. Maybe a Soft Light layer set to around 30%? I'm not sure, I just need a little more depth. The colors themselves are very pretty and nicely matched. :)

#5 - I think the colors are perfect for the scene, warm and soft but kinda deep at the same time. The only thing I notice is that the colors in Kaylee's hair are stronger that any of the once on Mal so it seems just slightly unbalanced.

I love your work so much, btw! :D

Thank you bb!

Would you believe that in number two I tried really, really hard to put a green texture in there and make it work with the purple of Dean's face, but I could not make it look good so I left it red xD But yeah, it's a bit much.

Haha! I know these moment when you try to do something again and again but the icon just won't have it. :D But I think the green really isn't needed, the purple and red give it a strong and sinister feeling that I like.

skill set: icons out of bigger graphics evangelin1202 September 24 2011, 09:19:00 UTC
I hope this counts, it's what's been worring me the most recently. When I make an icon out of a bigger graphic I can never shake of the feeling that it's cheap somehow and I'm almost never satisfied with these icons. On the other hand, they always come out more complicated than my usual icons. So, yeah. What do you think?

First of all, story of my liiiiife, all the graphics I make into icons end up looking different/more complicated, so what I try to do is either crop the larger graphics so that they look as if I composed them as icons, or kind of blend my techniques so that I make icons in the same way I would make large graphics, or make large graphics in the same way I would make icons. ANYWAY ( ... )

Thanks so much, hun!!

#2 is the one I had the most doubts about. You're right about Spike being darker and I really think I should try just removing the small Joan/Randy image. The text is a bit too mcuh right now but will probably look better is I do that.

1. I think this one is really well composed, and I love the simplicity of the black and white. I do find the text way at the top a bit unbalancing, because I think maybe if you'd originally made this as an icon, it would be further down? Right now, it creates an odd space dynamic because there's a lot of space between it and the cap below it, whereas the two caps at the bottom don't have a lot of vertical space between them.

2. I find the little cap at the upper right a bit distracting and overbearing. I'm sure it's fine in the larger graphic, but here it makes the icon seem overly full and detracts focus from the closer crops.

3. Love this! The composition is interesting and it's not too full. Great job.

4. This is a pretty good crop, but I find it odd that the top half of the icon has the caps a ltitle cut off and the bottom has what I'd consider to be extra space. Centering the crop differently might help this look more balanced, in my opinion.

5. I love this! Great negative space.

Hope some of that was helpful!
