How to make backgrounds/textures like this:
from scratch. Interested? :D

Tut: #5
Made in: PS CS3
Uses: Color layers, lighting effects, brushes, gradients, blend modes.
Translatable: Maybe/Mostly
(see this icon batch for more examples of the background)

1. Start off with a blank 100x100px square.

2. Fill it in with a solid color.

3. Duplicate that layer.

4. Go to Filter> Render> Lighting Effects.
Your settings should look something like this.
**If you think the effect is too much change the opacity.

5. Make a new layer.

6. Go to gradients, and select the "Foreground to Transparent" gradient.

7. And with black, drag your gradient line at an angle from top to bottom.
Should look a bit like this:

8. Set this layer to Soft Light at opacity 65%

9. Make a new layer.

10. Take a soft edge brush in white and make a solid circle. (I chose the Soft Round 65px brush)
The size of it should be about like this:

11. Now take your Move Tool and drag your brush layer across the icon wherever you like it.

12. Make that brush layer's opacity at about 20-30%
Like so:

13. Repeat steps 9-12.
Mine:

14. Now, repeat steps 9-11.

15. Turn this brush layer to Overlay at 30-60%.
Mine:

Optional:
16. Now I made another brush layer, set it at overlay at 16% to make it less of a contrast on the left side of my icon.
17. I added a texture and colored brush layers to show some other things you can do with something like this.
Be creative with it!!

and DONE! :D
