I'm not sure about the ultra compact. They come out with new models every few weeks, and I haven't been in the loop for over a year now. I recommend looking in stores like Circuit City and Best Buy to see what kind you might like as far as size and appearance, then consult the internet for reviews. I know circuit City has customer reviews of most of the cameras they sell - and not all of the reviews are good, so it's a pretty good gauge. It's been my experience that customers who own Canon point-and-shoots really enjoy them.
As far as a "nice" camera goes, that really depends on your budget. Gabe just got the Nikon D80, which I personally think is the best total buy out there at the moment, having high resolution, a versatile lens, and a body that is both ergonomic and suited for long term learning (lots 'o features). However, if you were to buy now, you'd easily spend over $1000 before you even got the the must-haves like a UV protector filter and a memory card. I believe you already have a Canon SLR if I'm correct, so you might consider going with Canon since your lenses are likely cross-compatible. I would suggest looking at the Rebel line in that case. I think the XTi is the latest and would be less expensive since its lens is less versatile and it uses a CMOS sensor instead of CCD.
That's the best I can do right off. I'll be happy to answer any follow-up questions you may have.
