Cuz he's a cranky boy.
Some folks might remember
THIS SKETCH I did way back in January. Yeah. So, I've not had the time nor the inclination to try and do anything more with it since. Until recently.
Dino bought me
Manga Studio 3. Squee! That was a couple weekends ago, and I've been dying to experiment and play with it, but I simply haven't had the time. Well, today I said enough was enough! And I set aside some time to putter around and get to know the program. This was a good thing, because I have been in a real creative funk lately, and this really helped to get the ol' creative juices churning again. I have a couple of unfinished sketches lying around I could have messed with, but I decided on this one in particular because Dani's Yamato is homicidal and cranky.
So, quick review of the software: Not very intuative, but if one is familiar with any high-end photo-paint program, it's not difficult to bluff one's way through it. The user's guide isn't translated all that well in places, so it was a little frustrating trying to figure out what it was talking about sometimes.... especially since I didn't realize at first that there is more than one version of this software, and I was looking for features that my version (Debut) doesn't have (damnit! I really could have used that line smoother tool!!!). If I end up using this more often, I might poke at Dino and see if he'll get me the EX version. But aside from not having some of the tools I was really salivating for, using the program wasn't so bad. And I can tell I haven't even scratched the surface of what this puppy can do.
I am in LOVE with the brush setting on the pen tool. *heart*
I usually ink by hand... using the mouse to do the inking is not easy when one isn't used to it, so some of my lines ended up a little wobbly (that's why I needed that line smoother tool!). And the process for pasting in the tones was a little clunky. But I think what I ended up with turned out pretty decent. And it was fun poking around and experimenting with a new program.
So, first go look at the original sketch...... and now have a look behind the cut.
Okay, I did lose a lot of detail in the compression, but... I just gotta say - - THE HAIR! I am so pleased with how the hair turned out thanks to the brush setting! Squee! Actually, I'm happy with his whole head, but am giddy about the hair. So, for those of you who might be wondering what this big deal is... all of the shading and hues in this picture are done using tones... in other words, little tiny dots. No solid color fills.... errr, with two exceptions, and those are the bottoms of and straps on his shoes. Otherwise, this picture is made up entirely (except for the lines) of bazillions of teeny dots. And I really like how it all turned out. Especially the head.
Heh... in the original sketch, he looked sad... now he's at least smiling a little, but he still looks apologetic. This is appropriate.
Addendeum: This is by no means a finished piece. There's a couple more details I'd like to add, but time constraints dictate I must set it aside for now.
Well that's it! Nothing more to see here! I am glad I did art tonight, it really felt good. Dani - I hope Yamato likes it... though I'm sure he won't admit it if he does. *pout* That's okay. We love him anyway, even if he is cranky.
Tomorrow: studying for the biology final, and practicing my last speech!
