Did you know that, at least according to Wikipedia, all four original Golden Girls are still alive and kicking? Granted, they're in their 80's, but still. I'm impressed.
Why the new-found interest in The Golden Girls. It is thus: I have been home in bed most of the week with an ass-kicking cold + laryngitis. The Multnomah County Library, bless its soul, offered up the complete fifth season of Golden Girls for my viewing pleasure. I can't wait.
Speaking of laryngitis (say that three times fast...oh wait, I can't talk), I don't think I've ever really appreciated how much of my time is spent in oral communication. Sure, I've had sore throats before, but this is the first time that I've really lost all ability to speak normally. Much can be conveyed with the eyes, and head nods and hand gestures help immensely too, but it's not the same at all.
...it's nearly impossible to work in retail with this problem.
I've tried--since Wednesday I've been making an effort to go to work, smile and nod at customers and rely on my coworkers to explain for the 4 millionth time what's in a gibassier. I've been keeping to the espresso machine, and hoping customers can figure out for themselves which drinks are theirs (since I can't holler TALL TRIPLE NON-FAT NO FOAM LATTE anymore). Fortunately we have so many regulars that I've been able to make it work at least some of the time. But today, I think my co-workers were frustrated with the no-voice girl remaining in the tip pool on a slow day, so I've taken myself home to watch Golden Girls and pray that my vocal cords recover soon.
I've tried tea, honey, lemon, lozenges, soup, Indian food, etc. Any further suggested remedies are welcome.
