new classes this semester are, in their order of excitingness: historical linguistics, phonology, and more psycholinguistics. historical is great for so many reasons. our prof keeps reminding us that you have to know so many languages (not to mention a fuck-ton of world history) for its principles to even be useful… and in that way it makes me think of astronomy, because it’s so old and useless and demanding and romantic. also, unattainable.

phonology’s just fun because dr. h will attempt to make any hypothetical sound combination a student asks about, and the result is often obscene. (ie. last week sara asked him how one would nasalize an "h" and he was all, “like this: huuuuh…” and it was so wrong that the whole class burst into embarrassed laughter.

psycholinguistics blows, but it’s less reading than second language acquisition.

work is busier than ever. rugby is still more fun than any legal activity ought to be. however, january in south carolina is too cold for anyone to be rolling around in the mud outside.

spent the last two weekends in town and met mostly-enjoyable folks. had adventures, but will have to tell about those in the next post.
