The last couple of weeks have been amazing to say the least. I haven't been posting a ton here but if you see me on facebook you might have a clue why.
The first week of June was made of all sorts of awesome. On Thursday the 4th Liz and I headed up to Brantford, ON. I was playing in a street hockey tournament there named the Walter Gretzky Street Hockey tournament. Walter(Wayne's father) is the figure head for it and he was out and about all weekend. We got to meet him in between games that we played in on Friday night. The games on Friday were a little frustrating, but we got through them. Saturday ended up being the real treat. The team I was on was sponsored by movie director/writer Kevin Smith(Clerks, Mallrats, etc...). He sponsored 4 teams in the tournament including his own. On Saturday we had the honor of playing against Kevin's team. His team included a lot of his friends and people he was worked with throughout his career. It was awesome to say the least and they were all really cool. An abundance of pictures were taken and I put some of the better ones up on my facebook. That evening culminated in Kevin and Scott Mosier doing a live Smodcast in Brantford. It was really cool to see. All in all it was a very memorable weekend.
During this same time frame the Penguins were in the midst of the Stanley Cup finals against Detroit. We drove up to Brantford after work on Thursday the 4th and made it there in time to watch the last half of the game. The Pens won that game evening the series at 2. Liz and I drank much Rickard's in celebration. Saturday the 6th was a little rough. The Pens lost 5-0 and a lot of people had written them off. This past Tuesday(the 9th) the Pens came back and won Game 6 to tie the series at 3. It was great to see them make it through game 6, but a lot of people cast doubt in their direction because game 7 would be in Detroit. Game 7 was Friday night and was absolutely amazing. To see Max Talbot come through with 2 goals and for the Pens to hold Detroit off from scoring a late tying goal was amazing and stressful at the same time. For them to somehow win that game losing Crosby midway through the game was a miracle in itself. Needless to say I am happy with the result but it also shocked me. This team overcame so much adversity this year. From losing Gonchar for much of the year. To struggling for quite a bit of the season. To firing Coach Therien and hiring Coach Bylsma. They persevered and managed to make the playoffs. The team went through a lot and overcame it. This season was another amazing run by this team and you couldn't really ask for a better ending.
Last year I did a bit of thank you thread to close out my end of season post. I'll do a similar post here. I once again have to thank Liz. We went to a weekend set of games in March and had a lot of fun. She continues to support my hockey obsession and for that I thank her. To the kids, Annie and Pepper. Thanks for watching much of the season with me. Mom & Dad thanks for going along for the ride during the playoffs. I changed my tv stations on the satellite and lost the VS. network. You let me come over and watch every game while also feeding me awesome home made Buffalo Chicken pizza. I think mom rediscovered her love for watching hockey. Thanks to the beer companies for making some good beer for me to drink during the playoffs. High Falls, Sam Adams, & Leinenkugel's you did not disappoint me.
I found out yesterday that I will be headed to New Jersey to play some more street hockey with Kevin Smith and his gang plus some of the others who played in the Brantford tournament. Should be a lot of fun.
