I always try to refrain from reviewing shows of artists I like in the first place...seeing how it's not that objective and all...but even if I didn't already like Brandi, even if I hadn’t already driven several hours to get to Atlanta, after seeing her show last Friday at Eddie's Attic, I would have gone home a true believer.
I saw her perform two months ago in North Carolina when she was opening for Marc Broussard. That show was great and I walked away truly blown away. I had hoped that everyone else felt the same, but unfortunately, the majority of the people were there to see Marc and I can't say she had all of their undivided attentions. Eddie's Attic, however, was completely different. Not only was she the headliner, but she managed to sell out two shows! Many people I spoke to at Eddie's, had first noticed Brandi when she opened up for Ray LaMontagne back in December. They had gone to see Ray, but were blown away by Brandi and made a point to see her again.
Eddie's Attic is a great intimate venue and the crowd was so enthuastic yet respectful. There were many times that evening when you could have heard a pin drop...everyone was waiting on Brandi's next verse, the next breath out of her mouth which seemed to speak to everyone on deeper levels.
We were really in for a treat that night. Not only did Brandi, even despite playing an earlier show, sing her heart out and Tim, Phil, and Chief, accompany right in step, but we were also in presence of another great musician. Emily Saliers from the Indigo Girls had come to Eddie's Attic, a venue she used to play at all the time, to see Brandi perform. Honestly, I can't begin to imagine how excited Brandi must have been to have Emily in the audience, especially since she’s sited Emily and the Indigo Girls as a playing a major influence in her career.
Brandi closed her set with Hallelujah and dedicated it to Emily. Even though I've heard Brandi sing it before and found it moving, this time was different. Can we say “more moving?” Seriously, I swear you could see people wiping tears away from their faces it was that amazing. We were all in awe.
However, in my attempts to be objective about the evening...I will say that the opening act made a bad joke about Cincinnati that I didn't really appreciate. But that’s all I really have to say about that.
