Disclaimer: If, only if this happened in real life, it's purely coincident. I don't know them, don't own them. They didn't hate each other in real life, right?
A/N : inspired by New Year Matsumiya Almost Kiss event. I'm late, I know.
When Jun met Nino for the first time, he already told Sho that he hated that man to his guts. Nino was carefree, stubborn, and playful -- Sho understood Jun’s reasoning when he was told about it.
Jun was stoic while Nino was the opposite.
Jun’s hatred for Nino wasn’t a secret. Almost everyone in Johnny’s knew about it and so did Nino. But Nino being Nino, a person who never really care about the people around him, he ignored Jun’s loath for him.
It’s not that Nino didn’t care care about the people around him. It’s that’s he has learned from the past: the more he cared, the more that it’s going to burden him in case something happens. Hence, every single time he met Jun’s gaze, he either turns around or choose to look the other way.
And that was how he survived his days as Junior.
Did he hate Jun as well? If he had to reminisce the past, then no, he didn’t hate the guy. He was pretty neutral about the company’s elite member.
But there definitely came a time when he started hating on Jun, too.
***
“Starting tomorrow, you-tachi are Arashi.”
Nino didn’t remember when exactly he started hating Matsumoto Jun for stoicism and enthusiasm when it came to work. It wasn’t a bad thing, Nino admitted. But for someone who considered quitting Arashi and Johnny’s, having Matsumoto Jun by his side was such a pain in the ass. He did enjoy his work. He really did. But to take everything seriously was so not Nino. That was when he started wondering about how someone could be so serious over something silly.
Jun, on the other hand, hated Nino even more when everyone got impressed with everything he did. For god’s sake, Nino did this job half-heartedly. But still, to everyone, he’s outstanding. While he, Matsumoto Jun, gave his everything; he gave his utmost effort in everything. Yet, why wasn’t he given recognition?
The next few years after their debut, nothing has change, they were still in bad terms. They won’t talk to one another unless necessary. During their private time, they still wouldn’t look the other way, let alone have a serious conversation.
Most of the time, Nino minded his own business. Sometimes, he’d bother Aiba or Ohno to make the awkward space between him and Jun not too obvious. Of course, they knew about it. While the other three never sided with anyone, there would be Sho and Jun as one team, and Nino, Ohno, and Aiba as the other, for the sake of creating a ‘fine’ atmosphere.

Jun didn’t realize when his hate for Nino started to tone down. Sure, he went through a rebellious phase which distanced him from Sho but slowly, the tension between him and Nino subsided. They started talking outside work though the topics weren’t as the ones he had with Aiba or Ohno.
One thing that made him glad to be in Arashi was how they chose to respect each other by not saying anything negative towards one another. Sure, he hated Nino but he never said it directly to the man’s face.
Until that one day.
His schedule was full, hectic. Filming for a drama and a variety show was too much for him after a long period of inactivity for the group.
He was tired. He wanted to have a break. Aiba laughing his usual hyena-like laughter along with Ohno shrieking over things that Nino teased him with, Nino’s screaming voice as he complained about Aiba’s antics did not help. It did not help him at all.
“Could you guys, please, shut up?” he hissed, refusing to make a scene with that staff walking in and out of the room. “We can’t let some people have a good rest while waiting, can we?”
But Aiba didn’t read the atmosphere good enough.
“But a quiet greenroom is boring, Matsujun. Why not just join us?” Aiba said, pulling him towards the group. Jun harshly refused.
“I need to rest, Aiba-san. You guys can have your happy crack hour together but let me rest, please. I have another shooting right after we’re done. While you don’t have anything much in your schedule, have respect for someone who does.”
And Nino, being Aiba’s faithful bestfriend.“Seriously man. You don’t have to be THAT disrespectful.”
“So, how am I supposed to say it to them?” Jun retorted, putting his script on the table with a loud thud. “Should I cup his face, caress him and say, ‘Sorry, Macchan. I’m sorry that I have to work harder for the sake of this group that I can’t participate in being idiots like the other two’.”
“Mind your---” Nino paused, noticing a warning glare from Sho who was watching them from a corner of the room. “Whatever you wish. Let’s go, Aiba-chan,” he said, pulling Aiba.
Jun didn’t know what drove him to do that because the next thing he said turned the room into dead silence. “Why was I being thrown into a group that consisted of a person that I hate the most?”
Smirking, Nino asked,”Is it me?”
Silence.
“It’s me, right? What took you so long to say it?”
Jun fell silent. For once, all his anger was gone, and so was his exhaustion and aching body. He looked at Nino who in turn was looking at him with a scornful look. Jun wasn’t blind; there was a mix of sadness in Nino’s eyes. The time they’ve been together wasn’t short. No matter how good Nino’s acting was, he couldn’t hide the sadness.
Still…
“Sorry,” Jun muttered egoistically.
“Don’t say sorry if you don’t mean it, Matsumoto-san. I don’t and never will force you to like me either.”
No one said anything afterwards. The room was silence, sending chills all over his body. The next thing, Jun realized he was alone in the greenroom with Sho.
His eyes locked on Sho who was looking at him with eyebrows raised. It felt like Sho was mocking him for the mess he made earlier. Somehow, it made him feel uncomfortable staying in one room with the man he once admired.
“You have to sincerely apologize,” Sho said before he made his way out of the room.
Jun didn’t respond to Sho. Though, the next time he met Nino, he did.
“About what I said last time, I’m sorry.”
“Yeah,” Nino said whilst playing with his phone. “Everyone needs a good rest. It’s understandable.”
Silence.
But after a while, their eyes met.
Jun didn’t know why. Somehow he was glad hearing Nino chuckle.
***
That was years ago.
As years passed, Jun started to become less bothered about how annoying Nino could be. His snarky comments, his annoying remarks, his over the limit teasing, somehow Jun started to get immune to it.
For once, the statement ‘We never fight’ seemed to be plausible for them now. Even when there are times that they never really agree with other, no one is being loud about it. They will end with a simple hum before one of them moves away while the other will not try to press on the topic.
Between Jun and Nino, everything has become calmer than before. Nino was sure a stubborn jerk most of the time, but nothing satisfied Jun more than Nino following everything he had planned. Of course, Nino did give annoying remarks about him on their variety show. Maybe it was because they had grown up that Jun decided to ignore most of the that and would just make a face if he didn’t agree, but only for the sake of entertainment.
But sometimes, Nino is actually a stubborn jerk.
Almost everyone thought that Nino was strong enough to stay in the industry. But they had been together for 15 years. Little that everyone knew, Nino’s loudness was just a way to hide his fragile side. While most of the time, he chose to keep it as a secret on how he was dealing with his sickness, it was his peak when they were in Hawaii.
It was hot. Yet, the time they had was a limit. They kept practicing despite the weather but not once did Nino whine about how hard it was for him. True, he whined about the weather. But that was it.
Jun noticed. He did notice every single thing that happened on stage, rehearsal or not. On the event day, he kept asking Nino if he was fine and Nino just waved it off, annoyingly that Jun had to hold himself from bursting out at the man. He knew Nino was feeling off that day, but when the man glared at him before he could ask, he let Nino to carry on without trying to mention about it again.
Except, Nino told the staff when everything was too much for him to handle.
“Are you ok? Should we slide up?” Jun asked, concerned was obvious in his voice. It made him questioned himself when Nino said he’s fine.
“Let’s slide up?” Ohno suggested. One simple suggestion and Nino agreed. For once he felt like punching someone when he heard that. But the fact that they had no time to talk, Jun tried to forget about it, and go on with the concert.
“You should rest,” Ohno said to him in the van as they headed back to the hotel after the concert. He can’t help but watch Nino, who was sleeping uncomfortably next to Aiba, both seated in front of him
“They said-“
“They will provide him proper medication tonight, so I don’t think you should bother--“
“I’m not trying to be a bother, Ohno-san,” He hissed. “He pissed me off.”
“By agreeing with me when you were the one to made the suggestion? Believe me, he’s more complicated than that.”
That’s what he didn’t understand about Nino.
Hence, despite how many times Ohno had told him to stay away from the man, Jun insisted to stay in Nino’s room that night.
He felt the urge to punch the man hard on the face when Nino rejected every single thing he offered. From bringing him a glass of water, to helping him towards the bed. Everything. When annoyance conquered all other emotions, he asked.
“I was the one directing the concert, Nino. But why was it that when I suggested us to slide up, you disagreed and only to agreed when Riida made the same suggestion?”
Nino threw him a look of disbelief.
“You’re seriously asking me this now?”
“Yes, I am. And when I ask, I demand an answer.”
“Respect.” Nino wanted to answer at first. But when he saw how Jun looked at him, with a questioning look on his face, he sighed before he continued. “Because of respect. I can’t have someone who worked so hard on a plan and make him change it just because I can’t do it.”
“And agreeing with Ohno?”
Nino had no answer to that.
“Don’t tell me it’s true.” Jun’s eyes widened. “You have a crush on him, don’t you?”
“Idiot!” Nino snapped. “I need to rest, Jun and if you really need an answer to your question, it was all because of respect. I respect you as the concert director and I respect Riida because he’s the leader. Now, if you could please excuse me. I need to rest.”
For a while, Jun didn’t move from his spot. He kept on observing Nino, who was now smashing the buttons of his DS, ignoring Jun’s presence.
“Need my rest, my ass,” Jun thought inside his head. After a while, he sighed, knowing there’s no point in pressing on the topic again, when Nino had no interest in doing so.
But before he could reach the door, Nino called him.
Could you please get me that bottle on the table?
Jun did.
“And my towel.”
Again Jun did.
“Can you-“
“Seriously, Nino. I am not your servant! At least use the magic word.” Nino looked at him confused. “’Please’, Nino. I thought you had manners.”
Nino chuckled.
“Yeah, you’re not my servant. Bye, J. Sweet dreams,” Nino said, once again pretending like Jun wasn’t there.
Watching this, Jun clicked his tongue, annoyed.
“Why are you being such an annoying jerk, Niomiya? I tried to be nice yet you’ve never treated me any better.”
The only response Jun got was a soft giggle. Clearly more annoyed, he stomped his way out of Nino’s room.
Except, before he could pull the knob, came a reply from Nino.
“Because I don’t want you to fall in love with me.”
“Excuse me?”
Shutting the door again, he made his way back to the man. Their eyes met. This time, no one tried to shift their gazes away from each other.
Nino laughed.
“Come on, J. Ever since you hated me years ago, don’t you think it was actually because you admired me?”
“What the actual f-You seriously are not making sense anymore,” Jun retorted.
“I do, actually,” Nino said, a mocking smile formed on his lips. “Sho told me that you once told him, ’HE was acting annoyingly cute that I feel like punching his face’ --- with that, ‘he; is referring to me.”
Jun’s eye widened. That Sho--
“So what?” Jun replied with a snort.
“You liked me because I’m cute!”
“Stop making wrong interpretations, you idiot,” Jun said, a trail of laughter heard in his replies.
“Maybe, and I dare say that you actually admire my acting so much that it annoys you to the core.”
“I DON’T.
“You don’t?”
“Definitely,” Jun said shaking his head.
“Ok, how about this. You hate me because I was so hard to approach?”
“What the heck was that?”
“So, it’s not that?” Nino said, feeling dejected.
“Absolutely NOT. You’re talking shit right now. Cut it off.”
“Hehhh… to think that I might stand a chance.” His frustration became even stronger this time.
“HUH??” Jun frowned. “ What chance?”
Snickering, he tugged the blanket as he leaned his back properly.
Jun frowned even harder.
“You know how sometimes, being annoying will make a guy pay attention on you? Well I did that for the same reason. I mean, if one day, like today, and you make it clear to me that you don’t love me, at least, it wouldn’t hurt as much as when we’re trying to be nice to someone we like. You get that?”
Jun fell silent. It’s complicated. All of sudden, it felt so hard for him to understand Nino. Especially with he had learnt from the man today.
But Nino wasn’t making any sense. His reasoning was unacceptable.
But then, did he make any sense too? After all the years of hate, why was it now that he was so concerned about the man? Why was he being annoyed of the fact that Nino disagreed with him but agreed with Ohno? Was it because of that same reason?
“You love me?” he asked, his voice soft, as his gaze locked on the man. He saw Nino sigh.
“Goodnight, J. Sweet dreams.” Nino said, completely covering himself with the blanket.
Nino heard the sound of the door being closed.
“Jun must have left,” he thought. He felt like slapping himself by saying unnecessary things to the man. “Things are gonna be awkward after this. God, forget what I said, Matsumoto Jun.”
But then, he felt a pressure on the side of his pillow. Startled, he opened his eyes only to be greeted by Jun’s face only few inches away from his.
“You love me?” Jun asked again, his face stern, making Nino wonder if his heartbeat was accelerating because of Jun’s stern face or because of how close they were to each other.
“Seriously, Matsumoto. I need to-“
And he didn’t get a chance to finish it. Even when their kiss stopped, he had forgotten what he meant to say.
Jun kissed him. If the fact didn’t surprise him enough, then Jun climbing on his bed, sleeping next to him with his hand wrapped around waist did.
“Now go to sleep, Nino, or I might change my mind,” Jun said to him before he heard the man’s snoring few minutes later.
He can’t help but grin in the darkness, silently enjoying this moment in Jun’s embrace.
“Definitely a good medicine to my backache” he giggled before drove to sleep
OMAKE
Jun couldn’t help but grin while he walked ahead to the greenroom.
What happened earlier kept on playing in his memory. The senpai sure loved to tease them a lot but to have both him and Nino in front of the camera, performing the ‘kiss of the year’ trend, was quite the horror to him. But then, remembering Nino, who was trying hard not to laugh, blushing because of the closeness, Jun couldn’t stop himself from grinning.
What happen today, he will use it as a point to tease Nino. Even until they’re old, having their grandchildren sitting next to them. Too dramatic, he told himself, laughing.
He was sitting by the makeup table when Nino walked into the greenroom. The latter stopped for a moment when he saw Jun alone in the greenroom. He clicked his tongue as he made his way to the couch.
Jun laughed.
“I can’t believe that you can’t handle having my face even just an inch close to you, in front of national tv,” Jun immediately teased upon seeing Nino, who in turn ignored him and just took his seat on the couch, screening through the stuff inside his bag, and took out his DS.
Nino rolled his eyes.
“You laughed to be honest, I was actually waiting if you’d actually dare to do it with someone who hates your guts.
Jun laughed
“That was because you’re red!” Jun stood from his seat, making his way to the couch. “Having dejavu?” Jun teased again, grinning to see Nino’s annoyed look.
“Well, last time, it was the bed. Now, it’s an invisible wall. You can’t really call that dejavu,” Nino replied. He was about to start his DS, but before he could, Jun sat beside him.
Jun’s arm around his shoulders and one leg wrapped around Nino’s.
“Are you high? Jun smirked at Nino’s question. “It’s not even New Year.
“No. I just wanted you to reminisce the past.”
Nino rolled his yes.
“Just get straight to the point Jun-pon. You wanted and still want to kiss me.”
“Oh, believe me. If you didn’t laugh, then I would have.”
“Shameless.”
“Anything for you, Kazunari-kun, but for now..” Jun leaned in, his other hand wrapping around Nino as his fingers made their way into Nino’s hair, softly gripping as their lips touched.
It was soft. It was calm. It wasn’t rushed. It was perfect, just the way they loved it. The kiss, its warmth, and softness, and the way that they tell each other how much they were meant to be. They enjoyed every single moment that passed that none of them realized they were both running out of breath.
Until Aiba recklessly opened the door to their greenroom, startling the two. Aiba was a little shocked and panicked.
“Forget that I saw that. I didn’t see anything. Go ahead and do whatever you want.” They heard Aiba’s voice from the hallway, fading after a while. Jun laughed. Nino’s ears one again were red and he can’t help but touch it.
“By telling us to ‘go ahead and do whatever you want’, he obviously saw it.”
“Stop it!” Nino fend him off. “For god sake, you should wait.”
He harshly pushed Jun away from him and began to pack his stuff into his bag, then glaring at Jun when he heard the man laugh.
“Well, you’re provoking me, Kazu. I’m just playing along with it,” Jun said, playing with his fingers as he looked at the man with a smirk on his lips.
“God, why was it so hard for you to admit that you lost? That quality of yours made me hate you sometimes. Wait, it made me hate you a lot!” Nino grunted.
“I love you so I don’t care if you hate me,” Jun said.
Nino couldn’t hide his face that blushed bright red.
“Silly,” Nino said, annoyed. Though, Jun was sure that the man was only doing that to hide his real feelings.
“Feeling blessed?”
“Nope. I was actually wondering why I am hoping for you to like me in return. You’re too overbearing.”
“Your words, Nino, it cuts so deeply into my heart sometimes and I hate it.”
“Well, I love you, too, so your hatred doesn’t matter,” Nino muttered, loud enough to be heard by Jun.
Hearing those words from Nino’s lips, to Jun, it was more than enough.
“Go home, Nino. Please don’t wear too many layers. Makes it easier for us,” Jun said as he watched Nino make his way out of their greenroom. Nino responded with his middle finger, not even bothering to look at Jun.
All Jun did was laugh until Nino’s footsteps were no longer heard.
“Hate huh?” he asked himself with a lovesick smile plastered on his face.
