In a news story posted on yahoo, entitled Bush challenges Iraq strategy skeptics [link] President Bush scolded critics of his plan to increase American troop strength in Iraq by sending an additional 21,500 troops to bolster security. This is further proof that the polarization of the US political situation and the average citizen is just growing. From what I can tell(and maybe you can correct me if I am wrong), the level of polarization between the Neo-con Right and the Liberal/Socalist Left is quickly reaching the levels that the North/South were just before the Civil War.

I have a gut feeling that the more Liberal and Conservative states are going to split off in the next 50 or so years.

The problem with the idea of "liberal state" or "conservative state" is that many which are famous for one actually have segments of each .. often far more extreme segments than in more overall-moderate states.
