Spoilers are now available for episode eight.

The episode is called “Crossroad Blues”. It opens in a juke joint, as they call it. It says the title across the screen will say, “GREENWOOD, MISSISSIPPI”. AUGUST 16, 1938”. It says we find Sadie, who is in her 20’s, sitting alone, mesmerized by the music. The bluesman, Robert Johnson, is onstage. He’s 26, in a pinstriped suit, and a fedora. He exudes confidence as he plucks out a complicated riff. The bluesman looks at Sadie and gives her a knowing smile. He closes his eyes, feeling the music. Under the sound of the guitar, a CLICK CLICK is heard. It is described as claws on hardwood. Robert opens his eyes and looks around, but he sees nothing. He is thinking maybe he imagined that. Then the clicking noise happens again. This time it is described as an animal pacing. Robert looks out into the audience, but it is obvious no one hears what he is hearing. The audience is starting to notice his odd behavior, and Sadie is concerned. Suddenly at the window in the back of the room, he sees a large shadow dart past. It is the shadow of some kind of large animal. Then he sees a shadow at a window even closer to the stage. He abruptly rushes off the stage.

Robert is then walking down the road, carrying his guitar, and repeatedly looking over his shoulder. He hears a rustle in the brush. A big animal is stalking through the brush. He stops and it stops. He moves and it moves. He picks up the pace and hears a chilling canine growl. He drops his guitar and runs for it. He runs to his house, and locks the door. The animal throws itself at the door. Robert puts a chair under it. The animal continues scratching at the door. Robert backs away in terror. The scratching gives way to pounding. The door splinters, and then finally the chair does as well. The door bursts open. Sadie is with two men, and she sees Robert. He is collapsed on the floor, a bottle in his hands. His body convulses into a massive seizure. Sadie kneels beside him, sees the bottle, and summons for a doctor. One of the men takes the bottle, sniffs it, and realizes it is bad. Sadie asks Robert what happened. She tells him to stay with her. He grabs her sleeve, and manages a strangled whisper. He says, “Dogs…” Sadie doesn’t understand and gives a pleading look to one of the men. Robert says, “Dogs…Black…dogs…” He tries to say more, but he starts choking. Sadie tells him that he can’t die on her. Robert’s eyes roll up in his head. He is dead.

The next scene, the title on the screen says, “ROSEDALE, MISSISSIPPI 1928”. Robert Johnson’s “Crossroad Blues” kicks in as we see at the crossroads Robert Johnson. He is younger. His guitar is slung over his back, an anxious gleam in his eye. Robert Johnson sings, “I went to the Crossroads/ Fell down on my knees...” Robert falls to his knees as if he is praying. He sinks his fingers in the dirt and starts digging. He drops ritual items in the hole, Coins, Cat bone, and graveyard dirt. He pats dirt over the hole, and sprinkles Hoodoo powder over it in a circle. He waits, and then starts playing his guitar. He doesn’t play very well at all. Robert rises, and sees a black woman standing there. Robert says, “Holy”. She says, amused, “Not in the least.” Her eyes flash red. She is a demon. Robert steps back. The woman asks what she can do for him. He says he wants her to make him the best bluesman that ever lived. She says that she bets he does, because he is pretty awful. She says she will require a payment. Robert and the demon speak in low murmurs. The demon asks if they are agreed then. Robert asks if they are supposed to shake on it. The demon pulls him into a kiss. She pulls away and touches Robert’s hand where it grips the guitar. A shock runs through him. His eyes widen and he looks at his guitar with a new understanding. Robert moves his fingers to the strings ready to play. The demon is gone. He’s alone at the center of the crossroads, and he begins to play.

The next scene is Joe’s bar. Sam and Dean enter. Sam says, “So Robert Johnson sells his soul at the crossroads, records a bunch of killer songs about it, and the legend just keeps growing. I mean, everyone’s heard his story right?” Dean says, “Well he was important. Jimmy Page has a shrine to the guy.” Sam is thoughtful. He says, “Basically, without him, none of the music you like would even exist.” Dean says, “Yeah. I would be forced to listen to all those angry chick singers you’re into.” LOL

Sam and Dean go to an apartment building to see a man named George. Sam notices a black line of dust in front of the door of 4C. The brothers crouch down to check it out. Dean says, “What is it? Looks like pepper.” The door opens revealing George Darrow. He is in his 60’s, weathered, holding a whisky bottle, and eyeing them suspiciously. George says, “Who the hell are you?” Sam straightens up. He says he is Sam Winchester, and he introduces Dean. George says he isn’t buying anything. George starts to close the door. Dean says, “I think you reached for the wrong shaker, George. Usually when you want to keep something evil out, you go for the salt.” George freezes and says he doesn’t know what he is talking about. Dean holds up George’s photo from the crossroads. George’s eyes widen. Sam says that they want to help him. George wants to know with what. Sam says they know he is in trouble. Dean says, “That you got yourself into…” under his breath. Sam shoots him a warning look, but he ignores it. Dean asks if he is seeing that hellhound yet. Sam nudges Dean hard. Dean glares at him. George wants to know how he knows about that. Dean says they know a couple things about what he did. George says then they know they can’t help him. Sam says maybe he can help them then. One person is all ready dead, maybe two. An old lady walks by and shoots Sam a suspicious look at the word “Dead”. Dean says they can stand there entertaining the neighbors, or he can let them in. George glares at him and sighs. He says five minutes and not to disturb the goofer dust. George steps aside, allowing them to enter. Dean looks at Sam and mouths: Goofer Dust?! Sam mouths back: Shut up. LOL

In George’s apartment, the clutter tells us George has a drinking problem; practices Hoodoo (herbs, mojo bags, dog eared books), and is a genius artist. Paintings are everywhere: Dark figures at crossroads, red-eyed women, hellhounds, hallucinatory faces (like Sylvia saw). Sylvia is probably one of the people who died. George grabs a whisky bottle and refills his glass. George says, “You think you boys know something about something-but not Goofer dust? That’s about the simplest Hoodoo there is.” George tosses Dean a sack of the Goofer dust. Dean checks it out. Sam says Hoodoo isn’t really there area of expertise but they would like to learn. He asks what it is for. George says it is to keep out demons. Dean says, “Demons we know.” Dean pockets the sack. Sam inspects a disintegrating notebook scribbled with Hoodoo recipes: Hotfoot powder, Summon to Crossroads, Reverse Jinx, Devil Burn Paste.

George says they have four minutes left and not to touch anything. Sam says that he know he thinks his situation is hopeless. George says, “Listen. I get you want to help. I was a kid in New Orleans, my grandma used to teach me things. Herbs, mojos, all that. And she used to say there were folks out there-not many, but a few-who made that world their business. Who could sweep up a certain kind of mess. I gather that’s you.” Sam says “Sort of. Yeah.” George says then he knows that sometimes a person makes their own bed and they have to lie in it. Dean says that it isn’t really their philosophy. George gets upset and says, “You think I’m a fool. It’s all over your face. And you’re right. I am a fool. I called that demon ten years ago. Worst mistake of my life.” Dean asks why he did it then. George laughs bitterly. He is drunk and getting drunker. George says he was weak, and asks Dean if he was ever weak. Dean shrugs, not overly sympathetic, but he is listening. George says all a person wants is to be good at something. Dean asks if it was worth it. George says hell no. He asked for talent. He should have asked for fame. He says he is still broke and lonely, just with a pile of paintings no one wants and a burning desire to paint all the time. George says that wasn’t the worst though. Sam tells him to go on. George says the demon didn’t leave. He stayed for a week at Joe’s chatting, making deals. He said he tried to warn them, but who wants to listen to an old drunk. Sam asks how many others there were. George says an architect and a doctor lady. He kept up with them and at least they got famous. George drains his glass. He is getting sloppy. Sam and Dean share an urgent glance because soon George won’t be able to share anything. Dean urges George on. He wants to know who else. George says, “Nice guy. Hudson-Evan, I think. Don’t know what he asked for…don’t matter now. We’re done for.” Sam says no and that there has to be a way. George says he doesn’t want a way. He wants to take his medicine. Sam says he doesn’t have to. George says he called the thing, brought it on himself and on them. He is going to hell one way or the other.

George points to a braid of herbs on the table. He says that it is Devil’s shoestring and it repels evil. He has a lot of tricks. He points to the ceiling near the front door. Two red mojo bags hang there. George says, “Devil’s Bit mojo bags. Demon comes through, that’ll hold it for a hot minute." Sam says that’s great and that will help. George says he just wants to finish his last painting. All he needs is a day or two and wants to hold them off until then. George says it is time they left. Dean says they are not going to leave him to… Dean stops and tells him not to be stupid. George tells Dean not to be stupid and to go help someone who wants it. Sam says they can’t just…George cuts him off and says he has work to do. Sam says, “You don’t really want to die-" George says he has about a second and he is calling the cops. He asks him how he’ll save the world from a jail cell. Sam and Dean share a look, unsure of what to do. George tells them to just go. Next the scene opens at Evan’s house. Evan Hudson, 35, is doing the dishes. Vicious barking explodes outside the window and Evan jumps.

The sides skip, and Dean is outside Joe’s bar at the crossroads. Dean is with the demon. The demon says she is glad Dean called. Dean takes a step backwards. The sides describe it as looking like a flirtation dance between two professionals. Dean says he is just glad it worked. The demon teases Dean and asks if it was his first time. Dean says she could say that. The demon tells him not to sell himself short. She knows all about Dean Winchester. Dean is surprised to hear his name. He steps back and his smile falters, but then he turns the charm back on. Dean tells the demon not to keep him in suspense. He wants to know what she heard. The demon says she heard he was handsome, but he is just edible. She asks what she can do for him. Dean scans the area and says maybe they should do this in his car, in private. The demon says it sounds good to her. Dean says he is hoping they can strike a deal. The demon says that is what she does. Dean wants her to release Evan Hudson from his contract. The demon says she is so sorry, but that is not negotiable. Dean says he’ll make it worth her while. The demon wants to know what he is offering. Dean says, “Me.” This takes the demon off guard. A private smile spreads across her face. The demon says, “Well well well. Like father like son.” It’s Dean’s turn to be shocked. It is confirmation of his worst fear.

The scene jumps to Evan’s house. Evan is in the center of the circle, completely losing it. we get Evan’s POV. He is shaky, jittery, and there are sounds of barking everywhere. In the doorway, there are animal shadows. Coming right at Evan is a monstrous figure. It’s Sam, but not Sam. His facial features are floating away from him, evil. This must be the hallucinations they mentioned before. Sam tells Evan to stay in the circle. The scene goes back to the crossroads. The demon smirks at Dean’s discomfort. The demon says, “You did know about that deal your dad made to save your life?” Dean gets with the program. He resumes walking to the Impala. He opens the passenger door, and gestures for her to enter. Dean says, “After you.” The demon says, “Such a gentleman.” She steps toward the car and freezes. Under the car, a chalk drawing is visible. The demon says, “You’ve got to be kidding me. A Devil’s Trap?” Dean doesn’t have a quick comeback. He is caught red handed. The demon calls Dean stupid, and says she could have helped him. Dean tells her to hold on a sec. The demon says, “You blew it Dean. And not just for Evan Hudson. You only think you’re doing some kind of job, helping some poor stranger.” She leans close and says, “But I can see right through you. I could have given you what you need.” Dean says, “What’s that supposed to mean?” The demon says, “You’re father”. Dean stands steady, but the demon knows she has hit a nerve. The demon says, “He’s all you can think about. You wake up and your first thought is, I can’t do this anymore. You’re lit up with pain. It hurts so bad you think it might be easier to just die.” Dean tries to keep eye contact, but he has to look away, because she is absolutely right. The demon says, “And the worst part is-you don’t even know.” Dean says, “Know what?” The demon says, “Where your dad is now.” Dean is stricken and he can’t hide it. The demon says, “People talk about hell, they paint a cute picture, but the real thing?” The demon steps closer to Dean and continues, “Not even close. If you could see your poor daddy…if you could hear him, the sounds he makes ‘cause he can’t scream…you’d never have pulled a stunt like this. I could have brought him back for you.” Dean can’t hide how hard she just hit him. The demon says, “Bye Dean. I wish you a long life.” Dean tells her to hold on. The demon walks away. Dean watches, shattered by what she just told him. He walks to the nearby picnic table, slumps down, and buries his face in his hands.

The sides go back to Evan’s house. Evan is so freaked, he barely knows where he is. Sam physically holds him in the circle. Evan fights him, terrified. Invisible claws rip through a chair, and pictures fall to the floor and shatter. It’s chaos. Sam says under his breath, “Come on Dean.” The curtains are torn off the walls. The curtain rod smashes through the window. The window smashes into a million pieces. The sides then go back to Dean at the picnic table. The demon glances over her shoulder and sees Dean sitting there, utterly defeated. He doesn’t even look in her direction. She approaches him, stands over him, quietly. She says, “Oh Dean.” Dean looks at her, struggling to get composure. The demon says, “You didn’t call me here to bargain for Evan. Not really.” Dean looks away pained. Dean says, “So…could you really bring him back?” The demon sits beside him, like a saleswoman. The demon says, “Of course I can. Just as he was. The way you dream him.” Dean says, “I don’t know.” The demon says, “He’ll live a natural life, the way he was supposed to. And you-you’ll have ten years with him before your time’s up. That’s a lifetime, Dean.” Dean nods, considering this. He stands up. The demon moves to follow, but she can’t move. Realization hits her. Under the bench, we see the demon has sat down on an X carved into the wood. Four mojo bags hang from each of the points of the X. The demon says, “How the hell did you-“ Dean gives her a hard smile. He says, “What-how’d I know about Devil’s bit mojo bags? I’m big into research. Worked better than I thought-boy, you’re really stuck.” The demon tells Dean to let her up now. Dean says he will as soon as she lets Evan go. The demon says she can’t break a binding contract. Dean says, “And by can’t you mean don’t want to.” The demon says, “Dean, let’s talk about this.” Dean pulls a rosary and holy water from his pocket. He says he is sick of talking. The demon wants to know what he is doing. Dean says he is sending her back to hell. The demon says, “Forget Evan. Think of your dad-“ Dean pauses for a second. Then he says, “Domine sancta, Pater omnipotens, aterne Deus, Pater Domini Nostri…” The demon lets out an unearthly shriek.

Back at Evan’s, the shattered window showers the room with glass. Sam wraps his arms in his sweatshirt (the first of many layers), lifts the fabric to shield Evan and himself. The desk rattles as more pictures fall of the walls. Sam says, “Just hold on.” The broken window lets in a draft, which picks up specks of goofer dust. The circle is not going to hold. Back at the crossroads, the demon writhes as Dean continues the exorcism. Dean says, “Qui illum refugam tyranum et arostatam gehennae.” The demon says, “STOP!” Dean pauses and dangles his rosary threateningly. The demon is in pain and says she’ll do whatever he wants. Dean tells her to set Evan free. The demon gives a furious, conflicted look. That is where the sides end.

I think the episode sounds really cool. I thought it was interesting that we are getting a demon with red eyes this time. From what we have seen, the minor demons have the black eyes, while the major demon has the yellow. Maybe demons that get summoned have red eyes. I was thinking about Dean and the demon too. I know Dean was tricking her, but I think a part of him would have liked to take her up on the offer. He faltered a couple times, and the sides describe his feelings as sincere and not fabricated.

Also I had never heard of the legend of Robert Johnson until I read the sides. It’s weird though, because I am taking a music class and we were talking about Blues. So my teacher asks if anyone knew about the story of Robert Johnson. I had read the sides the day before and raised my hand. I said that rumor has it he sold his soul at the crossroads in 1928 so he could be a famous bluesman. My teacher was like, “Oh you must be a big Blues fan.” I’m like, “Actually no, but I am a Supernatural fan.” LOL Then I went on to explain about the show, what day and time it airs, and how a future episode will be about Robert Johnson. There are like 60 people in that class so who knows maybe some of them will check the show out. A shameless plug can’t hurt. :D We also listened to Robert John’s song “Hellhound On My Trail”, and this episode has hellhounds in it too.
