Subject: Lee Sungmin, Super Junior
So Shinn and I were discussing how we hate how Sungmin is portrayed in fanon, and it made me think. I'm all for AUs and stuff (which could allow a bit of out-of-character-ness - LOL I have no other word for this, sorry. XD), but I like AUs best when the boys are still grounded to their actual personalities. This is where the portrayal of Sungmin in most of fanfics, AU or otherwise, annoys me most of the time. He is often written as the cute, bunny-loving creature that's just, idk, sickeningly sweet. It annoys me because there is more to Sungmin than just pink.
From what I see, Sungmin is manly, regardless of the cutesy/ghei. I am fascinated by him because he can switch "masks" (cute or manly) easily. I think that says something about him. I'm not saying that Sungmin is fake or what, because he isn't. I think what this means is that Sungmin's switches are calculated moves - he knows when to use the right amount of cuteness or hotness every single time.
It amuses me to use the word "manipulative" for Sungmin, because at a certain extent, I think he is. In
shiwon_tops_all (more popularly known as "the Hooker 'verse"), Sungmin is just that. He knows what he wants, and he will (and can) do anything and everything to get it. I think this portrayal of Sungmin is closest (if not spot-on) thing I've seen to what Sungmin really is.
Fanon aside, Sungmin has got to be one of the manliest members of Super Junior. So yeah, he may like cute things, but that doesn't make him less of a man. In fact, I think Sungmin uses this touch of "girliness" to his advantage: I am amused how women are so comfortable with him (as seen from the sheer number of female friends that came to see him in one Super Junior T - Idol World episode), and as testified to by the SJ members (that Sungmin could almost always be found around girls before performances and stuff, LOL), but at the same time, you'd see that the "hanging out with girls a lot" stems from the fact that Sungmin likes the attention he gets from these girls. 8D
Sungmin can be caring and cute one moment, tough and dangerous the next (hello there, martial arts skillz). I guess he just knows what to be at any given time.
There are many facets to Sungmin, and it fascinates me. He is far from the cute guy people often stereotype him as, because that's a pretty shallow interpretation. I watch him closely during shows and stuff, because I like seeing him operate. If anything, this boy is smooth.
I should stop psychoanalyzing K-Pop boys, idk. *facedesks*
