I finished my first ever man-sock (navy Sock of Doom for my dad)! Well, almost.. it still needs to be grafted. And it is big. BIG. I didn't think it was going to end! And I still have another one to knit by Christmas! This wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have to work tomorrow (3-Cl) and Sunday (10-7.. which is a little too close to being a turnaround for comfort). Brothers' hats? Yeah, those won't be finished in time. But that's OK. It's not all that cold here right now anyway.

Speaking of cold... Today I received a packet from WMU about their graduate school. ("Graduate school" in general, nothing specific about the program(s) I'm interested in, so it was rather slim.) They are a deceptive people. The one photograph in the pamphlet that includes people (most are artistic -- and inviting -- pictures of the library) features two people sitting in front of a gorgeous fountain on a sunny day, wearing long sleeves but by no means bundled up. Hmph. Well, that may fool some people, but I am not one of them. I know that that picture was probably taken on the hottest day of the year, in mid-July. I know that Michigan is much like New Orleans in that there is only one season. It just happens to be the opposite: we have really, really hot and then a brief period of not-so-hot; they have really, really cold and then a brief period of really cold. At least they realized that blizzards are not a selling point. I guess a photograph of people trying to make their way to class through several feet of snow* would not be nearly as appealing as a photograph that implies that you might be able to pull off flip-flops every now and then.

Right. Back to monster socks.

*Perhaps here I should note that I really know nothing about weather in Michigan, and that it just kind of fits in with my picture of the whole rest of the country as a big cold place that gets snowed in easily. However, due to Michigan's location on our continent, I'm inclined to believe that my mental picture is not too far off the mark.
