Indy Spot: Pahlish El Topo Petit
This is fast becoming one of my favorite greiges! Pahlish El Topo Petit is a dark greige with reddish copper shimmer, meant to mimic the sheen of a mole's fur; "el topo petit" means little mole in French, because the word for mole is where we get the color word "taupe." Cool huh? And way cute.
I lemminged (or should I say moled? ha ha, no not funny) this right away. I love me a good shimmer, and this metallic red is the perfect accompaniment to greige. Unfortunately it's one of the colors I haven't been able to find in a mix-in type shimmer polish or glitter, so I can't make it myself (or I would have!).
This is my first
Pahlish, but I've adored the shimmers in this line for years. The formula was bit thicker than I was expecting, which requires a bit of finesse to get the coat down, because it starts to hearden up and brushstroke if you play with it too much, but it covered in two nice coats, which is a plus. Also the shimmer has the nice quality of not needing several coats to build up - the base color and glitter are perfectly mixed and glide on that second layer together, so you pretty much get the same evenness of shimmer all over. And it's not so thick that it's hard to clean up - the first layer is kind of sheer, so it's easy to get off around your nail.
How visible is the shimmer? It's not inundating, but just a bit more obivious than my photographs - you can definitely see it in any light if you hold your nails up close and move them - it twinkles a really beautiful warm red! The sun shot is most similar to what you'd see, minus the huge white shine line; IRL the sun actually kind of washes out the glitter with all that brightness. It's a perfect mix IMO - shimmer that just peeks out on the surface, neither inundating the base color nor disappears when it leaves the bottle. (It's a bit more obvious in the bottle, but only just.)
How does this compare to other greiges? *breaks out wheels* It's on the darker side, but actually lighter than I was expecting. (Nowhere near the "dark end," which is what I like to call the really dark greyish ones like Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Grey Area. It's most similar in tone to OPI Jacques, but a bit more grey than tan; on the other hand it's slightly more purple, warm, than Zoya Jana, which is on the lighter, tanner side; probably the red shimmer helps give it an overall warm feel.
I'm wild about this polish. Red in greige is a shimmer I've been wanting, and they look amazing together. This was a must-have for my greige collection and a really gorgeous winter-appropriate shade with sophistication and a little bit of shine for anyone's arsenal. Thumbs way up from me! (I just got a Born Pretty order, so I may have to bedazzle it later!)
