33DC Day 33 (finally!): Recreate Someone Else's Manicure
Forgive the intermission - caught the December cold that was going around! Better late than never - I found tons of manis I wanted to try from the archives of the 33DC, but
this one by Kerruticles caught my eye - I love these colors together, and I've always wanted to try the little off-center flower thing. Plus it's one of the easier designs to paint! .... And guess what? It's Saturday, so I can totally count this as a Copykaturday!
The biggest challenge I ran into was, despite my huge purple collection, I didn't have anything quite like Kerruticles' OPI Every Month is Oktoberfest. I wanted something with a sort of "candy" sheen to match my red, Orly Cherry Bomb. I had several, but none with that warm beautiful shimmery glow inside the deep purple of Oktoberfest.
So I went with a bluer glow in a similar shade of purple and used Fingerpaints Be a Pal-ette ... Which turned out to be a mistake. This is seriously one of the most difficult polishes I've ever tried to use. I love the tiny particles of blue and purple glow that come up through the deep purple base ... but the polish is a HUGE pain in the ass! It took 3 or 4 coats to even get the opacity decent, and every time I went to put down another layer I got serious balding. It really turned into a problem on cleanup when I had a hard time covering accidental removal with the cutip (as you can see my pinkie is a disaster). Sigh. The red was much more cooperative - I've used it before, and I am a big fan of Cherry Bomb, only needed two coats, easy peasy, smooth and shimmery.
I'm not proud of my flowers, but it was at least partly the fault of Pal-ette - it was much more smeary and difficult to dry than the same dots with Cherry Bomb, but a topcoat sealed it in pretty good. I finished the flowers with a little dab of Pure Ice Silver Star - probably my favorite silver in the universe, because it's super opaque, super smooth metal finish, and doesn't require glue-base-coating or soaking to get off!
Exit review: Orly Cherry Bomb, I am still a fan. Fingerpaints Purple Palette, bad idea. I'm probably getting rid of it and trying the similar Sally Hansen Insta-Dri duochrome,
Grape Going (I hate Insta-Dri but it can't be worse than this, honestly!) And Silver Star is probably my favorite silver ever, and it's only $2 - a must-have. Also, Kerruticles' mani has made me aware i'm in need of a really nice, really dark, really rich warm "candy shimmer" purple, so I may have to get Oktoberfest or something similar.
That's it guys! If a bit late. I'll be posting a roundup shortly.
