Notes from up North

I'm in the big bad city with my mother. Her first time, my fifth.  We wound up in the upper east side instead of the lower, where I thought our hotel was booked, but  it's turned out well because I'm figuring out a part of the city I probably wouldn't have otherwise (unless I turn into some high powered business exec, improbably), and we've had fantastic meals straight through. We're staying at a W hotel. If you've ever been in one, you know that they are far too trendy for the likes of me and my mom. Our only lamp is literally a purple ball, I keep spilling the apricot water, and neither of us can see our whole faces in the bathroom mirror without standing on our tippy toes. The W apparently prefers their clientele to be 5'5" or taller. I hope they don't kick us out.

(insert elitist, snooty tone) I've seen everything already, so I've been letting her pick where we go . Yesterday we saw Rockafeller Center and Grand Central, and shoppped. Non-Orange Park shopping always blows her mind, so she had a ball on 5th Avenue. Today we ferried it to the Statue of Liberty (neat) and the Ellis Island museum (yaaawwwnnn, sorry immigrants). Tonight we have Billy Elliot, which I've already seen and have NO problem with seeing again. Tomorrow we check out my apartment, get my NYU stuff taken care of, and go see 12th Night in the park. Yessir.

Other Highlights:
~Had a glass of wine in our trendy hotel lobby with Carl, and we were both without question the worst dressed people there.
~On our car ride to Battery Park, our driver, upon learning I'm attending NYU for grad school, gave me extra props because "girls aren't usually that into school. They are mostly airheads." Cringe.
~A street performer did a flip over me. He didn't even ask! But he did tell me not to do drugs or rob houses. Wise.

Now I need an undershirt and a sweater, so I'm off to find an H&M. There's probably one downstairs.
