Mel Gibson and Danny Glover return as buddy cops Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh. Riggs is slightly less nuts than the first film but still a bit unstable and Murtaugh is still too old for this shit. This time they are assigned to protect annoying comic relief Leo Getz (Joe Pesci) and end up tangling with South African diplomat Arjen Rudd (a perpetually typecast Joss Ackland) who is hiding behind diplomatic immunity in order to smuggle drugs.
I really should have reviewed the first Lethal Weapon, but i like this one slightly more. The baddies from the first film were just your generic former military-turned drug dealers. In this film the baddies are South African diplomats. This was during the height of Apartheid, so you had some ready-made villains. It makes a change from your generic Hispanic drug dealers and Middle Eastern terrorists.
This film had lots of memorable moments. Such as the whole exploding toilet situation. One of my favourite moments from the whole series. What makes the Lethal Weapon series so good is that it has a bunch of funny scenes as well as the more serious action scenes. Then there is the climactic fight against Arjen Rudd and his cronies. Riggs has been shot full of holes and it is up to Murtaugh to save the day. Murtaugh even gets the best line of the whole film.
