Collecting Excalibur #51-58 and Excalibur: XX Crossing written by Alan Davis and Scott Lobdell. With art by Alan Davis, Dougie Braithwaite, Will Simpson and more.
First of all is a resolution of an old plot point. During the early issues of Excalibur, a family of American tourists disappeared through a time warp and were replaced by their counterparts from an alternate reality where dinosaurs had evolved into humanoid form. Then there's the secrets of the Phoenix Force. Rachel Summers is in a coma after defeating the last menace that Excalibur tackled. Professor X and the X-Men are called into help. The Phoenix Force then awakens and takes Rachel into space to heal. Next is a flashback to the early years of Brian Braddock's role as Captain Britain where he teams up with Spider-Man against a pack of humanoid dogs. Then the Crazy Gang, old foes of Captain Britain's, kidnap a village full of old people and creature a warped version of Wonderland. Then it is some nonsense with a would-be assassin who can shunt people into different time zones. He zaps Excalibur back in time where they fight a young version of the X-Men. A housewarming party is then interrupted by Brian's insane reality-warping brother Jamie. Finally, a team up with the X-Men against a gang of trolls.
remember when comics were fun? Yeah, I miss that. This book was a mix of rather humorous story with rather more serious stories. The story with the Crazy Gang in their warped version of Wonderland was rather silly, while the story line with the return of Jamie Braddock was rather more serious.
The art was a bit of a mixed bag. It was pretty decent for the most part with only duff bits. The issues that were illustrated as well as written were Alan Davis were the best. he draws such beautiful women. The XX Crossing was rather forgetable, but everything was pretty decent.
One of my favourite parts of the book was the aforementioned arc with Jamie Braddock. Before he attacked however, there was a little bit of business with Brian's ex-girlfriend Courtney Ross. Courtney plants a smacker on Brian, making Meggan jealous. Meggan shows that two can play at that came and does the same. The alien Cerise likes the idea and plants an even smacker on Nightcrawler that seems to go on forever. His expression at the end is just priceless. Later, when Jamie attacks, all seems to be lost when he uses his powers to warp the bodies of Excalibur and their guests. However, Meggan's powers make her immune to his reality warping and she decks Jamie hard enough to break his control and everybody begins to change back to normal. Psylocke then ends it when she fries Jamie's brain with her psychic knife. It just goes to prove that while Meggan might not be the brightest hero in the team, she will pretty much end you if you hurt her friends.
