over the past weeks, i've been peeling back more layers of history in exeter.
the public parks here are beautiful. they have flowers, even in winter, as well as birds that hover in front of your face if you're eating bread. a small castle sits by a green valley where the moat once was. the main part of it was closed, but i stood in the guard tower because i'm a history geek.
the castle is near the courthouse. in the 1680s, about 500 years after the castle was built, the last english women tried for witchcraft received their sentences here.
in the latter part of the 1900s, j. k. rowling went to the university of exeter. she eventually wrote about...witches. ironic? i think so.
everything is built on top of something else. the cathedral was built on the site of several older churches, which replaced a monastery that a martyred saint once lived in, which replaced a roman bath house.
so why does my title mention a cage? well, i've also been making friends with the other students. today was the university amnesty society's petition drive, and we sat blindfolded in a cage to attract attention. it's a strange experience.
ok, i'll stop rambling now. hope everyone back in the states is having fun.
