Provider Conscience Regulation

Aug 24, 2008 12:23

I was aware of this issue long before now and have posted about it before. However, maho_kiwi (through various journal links) let me know that is it still coming to pass. As she states in her journal:

For those who are unaware, this legislation states that all medical facilities that receive government funding would essentially need to promise that they wouldn't fire their doctors (or nurses or scalpel washers) for deciding that, based on "moral objections", they would not treat their patients. Officially, this is meant to apply to abortion, but the new legislation makes the definition of "abortion" so fuzzy that it would also allow health clinics to deny birth control prescriptions or emergency contraception to rape victims.

PLEASE write to your legislators. Here is an easy way to do that.

You can make a donation to Planned Parenthood, who is fighting to prevent this as hard as they can.

Contact everyone that you can. Congress.org should be able to help you with that as well. Keep your messages short and to the point, they are better received and more effective that way.

Thank you.

I have written to everyone that I could. Should this go into effect, the ramifications it could have, not only on doctors/nurses/interns specifically - but also on health insurance companies, would be disastrous. I could lose my birth control coverage and so could you. This could make it so that Plan B, abortions, birth control, everything that the men and women before us have fought so very hard to make available to us just disappear. This does not just apply to people who want to use a contraceptive for normal sexual intercourse, but it could also be used to refuse to provide a rape victim with Plan B or an abortion.

This proposal is a gross violation of reproductive/human/women's/men's rights. This is not just about abortion - this is about the people who are leading this country deliberately misconstruing scientific fact in an attempt to enforce their moral and religious beliefs on the population as a whole, all the while completely ignoring the populace's own personal beliefs.

This is yours, your girlfriend's, your brother's, your mother's, your father's, your son's, your daughter's bodies that we are talking about. This is not just a "women's issue." This is not just an abortion issue. This is a rights issue. This is about your and everyone's around you right to have control over their own body. This is so that way men can have a say in if they become fathers, so women have a choice of whether or not to bear a child. This is so that reproductive health is not set back to before the 1960s when the pill was first introduced. The Provider Conscience Regulation is a dangerous, not only to your health but to everyone around you.
