My college sent out an email two weeks ago tomorrow to announce that, following the end of her leave of absence at the end of July, the new president would not be returning to her position. The wording was benign, calling her student-focused, and the college wished her well in her future endeavors, and also she'd be staying in higher education. ( Read more... )

He was the conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and I believe this was related to him stepping back, but I don't believe he was full-on retiring. Last Sunday, 5-28-23, the Trib's Sports section had a feature article on Eddie George. He's a former pro football player who has gone into college coaching, and he has been spending a few weeks with the Bears as part of a minority coaching fellowship. A recent Tribune article published on 11-13-22 discussed the opera King Roger, which is unusual because it's in Polish. Many more common operas are in Italian or German, I'd say; this opera is hardly produced because of the language. She's one of those people I've grown up with and I admire her work based on her longevity and being my age. In going through my backlog of newspapers, I came across an article in the Trib from 9-6-20. It was written by Christopher Borrelli about Eula Biss, an essayist who lives in Evanston. He quotes her early in the article and what she says speaks to me as a writer.
